How Green Becomes Wood

"If she is coming, I hope she's in some costume, or at least tries to make me believe she is," Daizi teased, "I could tell you, but why spoil the surprise?"

"I will let Daizi know in advance so she does not unintentionally put him on the spot," Dark told him, peering intently out the window like a little kid trying to spot their parents in the crowd of their school play before rise.

"Aw, alright," Alec said, making a face and then grinning. He went to try to snag a piece of candy.

"Looks like some kids are hitting Lex's place," Xander remarked in amusement, trying to peer around his father. "I guess she's handing out candy. I wonder if she dressed up? What do you want to bet Toby dressed up as some kind of skateboarder?"

"The only skateboarder I know is Tony Hawk, and I only know his name. And that Cooger used to play his video game." Dark replied, watching in delight as the kids balked at this house. It was too early for the big kids because it was still light out, so rather than boasts and dares, it was just parents carefully convincing their kids it wasn't that scary.

When they finally did knock, he waited just long enough to answer the door so it wouldn't look like he had been waiting for them even though that was absolutely what he was doing. Because these were the little kids, he reigned in his delight at being scary so their parents didn't hate him for making their four year old cry but he definitely didn't greet them in his usual manner. Then, after hearing that magical phrase, he gave them candy of a better quality than they were likely to get all night, although these children were too young to appreciate it.

Xander hung back and let Dark shine, in awe of Dark's difference in personality. He was fantastic to watch! Xander did help hand out some candy, working in complete silenc and holding his eyes open as wide as possible. Alec had added a little bit of eye makeup to emphasize his eyes and make them look even wider. He wasn't anything like Dark, but it was kind of fun. When he wasn't helping, he was helping himself to the goodies on the table. He took great care to not mess up any of the more elaborate setups so at least Cooger and maybe Lex could see it.

Alec mostly followed Daizi and Ivy around, helping Daizi to keep an eye on Ivy and mostly watching to see how things worked.

When Daizi helped with the trick-or-treaters, she tried to play down her excitement to fit the character more, but it was hard to pretend like she didn't love it. A few of the people who came by expressed they were glad to see The Necropolis was functioning again because they were worried after last year. Anytime they did, they showed off Ivy and explained how she came early and surprised them, throwing off their plans.

Cooger's truck pulled up and although he normally just let himself in, this time he knocked so he, too, could trick-or-treat. He had pulled his hair back into a half pony tail with a simple three strand braid on either side and had put three braids into his beard which he had decorated with beard jewelry. Over a simple tunic, he was wearing chainmail, and over the chain mail he had put on leather bracers and a wide leather belt. Over his shoulders and tucked into his belt, was an animal pelt. He had fully committed to the viking look and it worked for him like the vampire look worked for Dark. The two men took a moment to look over each other's costumes before saying, almost at the same time, "You look great."

"Thanks, dude," Cooger said, when it was his turn, "But can you help me with the eyeliner? I bought all the stuff you told me to, and I've been practicing all week, but I still can't get it to look like I didn't let a baby draw it on. I brought it with me."

"Of course I will help." Dark promised, taking the bag of makeup from him.

Before heading upstairs, Cooger turned to Xander, showing off the bracers, "Hey kid, remember these? Had a pal of mine order them and the belt from your shop so I could wear 'em for Halloween without you realizing it was me. Didn't want ya to stress yourself out 'cause you knew the client."

Xander grinned as he looked over the bracers and belt. "I thought they looked familiar but thought I was just going crazy. They really complete the fit for you. You look great." He couldn't believe Cooger had been so sneaky! But he was also impressed by Cooger and proud of himself.

"It looks good, Alec you did a good job!" Cooger replied, following Dark up the stairs.

Not too long after, he came back downstairs with heavy black eyeliner smudged carefully below the cheeks. He also added a Nordic rune on Cooger's forehead. The look completed, he looked like real warrior, and he was feeling pretty good about himself.

Meanwhile, Daizi had turned on a Halloween music mix to further set the atmosphere inside.

"At this point, I'm not looking to disembowel anyone, but we'll see where it goes, alright?" He teased.

Since it was beginning to get darker, the number of kids approaching the house increased. Since they were starting to be older, Dark got more serious about trying to give them playful scares. They had to earn the best candy in the neighborhood.

"Come look at this," Cooger laughed, looking out the window towards Lex's house, "There are a group of kids clearly arguing about if they're brave enough to approach. They look to be about ten."

Alec and Xander leaned around Cooger to look, Xander holding a carrot stick in the corner of his mouth.

"What if we make this one a group project?" Xander asked around his carrot stick. "We could all be at the door this time. A viking is a little out of theme, but you could be a dead Viking."

"Can we make that work?" Alec asked doubtfully.

"Do you think we could sufficiently scare them if we tried that?" Cooger asked, looking down at them, "I don't know how to pull it off right."

"There is no time to plan, just get by the door," Dark huffed, getting into position behind the door, just waiting for the knock.

The twins scrambled to stand near the door at the back. Xander rapidly crunched his carrot stick and then tried to look wide-eyed again, looking slightly up instead of straight at the door. Alec put on the most woeful expression he could summon and waited.

As much as Daizi wanted to get her baby and dog involved in this, it would certainly ruin the scare factor, so she quickly set Ivy in her playpen and hurried to find a place amongst them. When he opened the door, Dark didn't even need to say anything before all the kids jumped back in surprise.

"You have to say the line if you want any candy," Dark reminded them with a glimmer in his eyes.

"the... the line?"

The kids shrieked again and some looked ready to turn and leave, but one brave soul looked at her friends and said, "No, we came here for candy! Everyone says this house has the best!"

"Probably because it's made with the souls of impolite children," Daizi said, pretending like she could check her nails.

"Come on, it's not worth it," One of the kids said, tugging on the leader's sleeve.

"If you want candy," Dark said, abruptly squatting down to their level and widening his eyes, "Then you have to say the line."

"beetlejuice?" One of the kids in the back said before being promptly whacked by one of their friends and Cooger had to turn away so he didn't laugh. He had spent the entire time glaring.

"Trick or treat!" The leader said confidently, inspiring enough courage amongst her friends for them all to repeat the phrase.

"That is the one," Dark glimmered, standing a very long way up and fetching the cauldron full of delicacies.

"Oh, for a seatbelt," Alec sighed, keeping his voice a low whimper.

Xander waited until the door shut and then glanced at Alec. "Oh, for a seatbelt?" he asked incredulously.

"It's how I died," Alec sniffed. "I thought it made for a good warning."

"That's what you want on Halloween, a good moral lesson," Cooger chuckled to himself.

"Do you know if Lex is coming over?" Daizi asked, freeing Ivy from her baby prison, "I don't want all of us to end up eating all the appetizers before she gets here."

Alec craned his neck to see out the window. "She's gotten a good number of trick-or-treaters. Maybe she's afraid to leave her house without getting mobbed. Oh, wait! Her porch light went out. We might see her yet."

Xander sidled over and grabbed another carrot stick. "Good appetizers."
