How Green Becomes Wood

"All right, here we go," Tristan said good-naturedly as he took the microphone. He cued the music, a song the twins had never heard, and waited for his cue in the lilting, Gaelic-themed tune.

Brogans, Grogans, Sitting there in Hogans
Drinking at the bottom of The Hill.
She broke my heart in the Phoenix Park,
And I nearly lost my will.
With a Brazen Head, she turned and said
You need to go on the Long Hall.
It was getting late so we jumped the gate
And crashed the Trinity Ball.

She says "Are we going home?"
I says no!

We′re going out for the weekend Chasing Rainbows
Going downstream, wherever the beer flows
I don't really care wherever the blame goes
Cos we′re going out and we're, Chasing Rainbows!
We're going out for the weekend Chasing Rainbows
Going downstream, wherever the beer flows
I don′t really care wherever the blame goes
Cos we′re going out and we're, Chasing Rainbows!

He had a decent singing voice. Untrained, but not awful. He stumbled over the words occasionally and lost the tune once, but he was game and enthusiastic. The best part of his performance, though, was the fact that he perfectly nailed the Irish accent.

Alec and Xander clapped along enthusiastically, joining in on the cry, "Chasing rainbows!" whenever Tristan indicated to them.

"I have no idea what some of those words mean, but that was a lot of fun!" Alec cackled.

Tristan breaking out an Irish accent to sing the song surprised Dark and Daizi so much they hardly ended up even listening to the words. Anytime Tristan indicated for them to cry out Chasing Rainbows, Dark nudged Daizi so she would do it too, although he himself refrained. Still, he and Daizi did applaud, because it was quite the impressive performance!

"I didn't even know you could do an Irish accent!" Daizi laughed, "That was astounding!"

"Thank you very much!" Tristan said with a cheeky grin, still holding the accent for a moment. He dropped it and said, "It's a fun party trick I enjoy. My grandmother was from the old country, and she had a brogue so thick you could cut cheese with it."

"What does that mean?" Alec asked, confused.

"A thick accent," Tristan quickly explained.

"Honestly, it's amazing how Irish the twins are, it's very common on both sides of their family," Daizi mused.

"I think this town has the greatest Irish population outside of Ireland."

"You're probably not too far off," Tristan chuckled. "Pennsylvania has the sixth-highest concentration of Irish in the US."

"Right, then!" Alec said cheerfully. He picked up the controller and waved it between Dark and Daizi. "The time has come!"

"It is nice for Rose, at least. She never intended to come here, but at least she is amongst kin," Dark said, pretending like he did not see the microphone.

"I can go," Daizi said, taking the microphone when it was handed to her. She had already told Dark the song she wanted to sing during Tristan's song, so she went up and when the music started she began to perform Heartlines by Florence + The Machine. She always had to be certain to pick songs she definitely knew all the words to, since it wasn't like she could read from the screen. She was a strong, powerful singer with a voice perfectly suited to Florence Welch's music, perfectly able to sustain the impressive long note near the end of the song. It may have taken her awhile to choose what she wanted to sing, but it was well worth the wait.

Alec and Xander clapped enthusiastically. They were accustomed to Daizi's singing, but it never got old. Alec sighed happily, wishing he could hear Daizi sing more often. It was always so amazing!

"That was amazing," Tristan said. He'd never come across Florence + the Machine before, and it was a shocking experience! In a good way, but still shocking.

"Thank you," Daizi said, bowing slightly laughing before hanging the microphone back up.

"Mama!" Ivy babbled, trying to wiggle off the couch. However, she did poorly and would've fallen hard, were it not for Dark reaching out one hand and catching her with the same calmness one would check their email.

"Nice catch," Tristan said, admiring the reflexes of a parent.

"That was really nice, Mama," Alec said. "I liked your song." He turned and looked at Dark.

Xander did the same, leaning back and crossing his arms. Neither said anything. They waited.

Dark gently set down Ivy so she could hurry over to her mother, who quickly scooped her up and kissed her all over her head, "Did you like Mama's song too, Hummingbird? I'm so happy!"

Dark glanced at the twins staring at him but did and said nothing.

Tristan grinned and said, "Come along, Mr. Dark. Surely you can grace us with one song? It is my first time, after all, and I was never told skipping was an option."

"Come on, Ba!" Alec encouraged. "Just one?"

"Ba," Alec frowned.

"Fine, then I'll go next," Xander said, reaching out for the microphone. "I'm thinking 'Some day my prince will come.'"

Alec groaned while Tristan laughed.

Dark sat back, averting his eyes to the ground. He didn't want to disappoint anyone, but it was really uneasy for him. If he was going to be made to sing, he needed a lot more time to adjust to the idea. It was truly something he did not enjoy.

"I think you'll sing that song beautifully," Daizi smiled, scooting nearer to Dark on the couch.

Xander cued up the song and started to sing. He leaned into the hamminess, pitching his voice as high as it would go and infusing it with a gag-worthy amount of wistful longing. It was a good thing it was a short song as Alec was nearly suffocating himself as he tried not to laugh.

Some day, my prince will come
Some day, we'll meet again
And away to his castle we'll go
To be happy forever, I know

Some day, when spring is here
We'll find our love anew
And the birds will sing
And wedding bells will ring
Some day, when my dreams come true

"Alright!" Alec wheezed, taking the control. "If that's how it's going to be." He paused as he quickly flipped through the selections. He found the one he wanted, tapped his foot, and started singing, "For the First Time in Forever" from Frozen as enthusiastically as he could.

'Cause for the first time in forever
There'll be music, there'll be light
For the first time in forever
I'll be dancing through the night
Don't know if I'm elated or gassy
But I'm somewhere in that zone
'Cause for the first time in forever
I won't be alone!

"They're trying to embarrass themselves for you," Daizi whispered to her husband, squeezing his hand, in response Dark grumbled a bit under his breath. "You know none of us will say a bad thing about you."

"It is not about that," Dark whispered back.

"Your turn, Ten," Xander said, passing it over to Tristan.

"Oh, dear," Tristan sighed, accepting the mic and controls. "Does this mean I have to sing a Disney song?"

"You could do a Pixar song, too, or any of those," Alec said with an impish smile.

"Alright, hold on." Tristan idly flicked through the songs on offer, thinking back. He spotted a song that triggered the memory of a different song from years ago. He paused, considering, and then looked for that song. Upon finding it, he resigned himself to his fate and started it playing. "I am never going to hear the end of this. I hope all of you realize that what happens in the karaoke booth, stays in the karaoke booth," he warned as the opening notes chimed through the speakers. Then he began singing a song from one of the old Barbie movies from years ago.

There's a place you can go
Where your heart is free
There’s a rhythm
That’s right for your soul
Take a breath, find your courage
And make the leap
'Cause your feet always know where to go

And you dance and you dance in an endless flow
In the grace of a perfect design
Stepping out of the dark and into the glow
The whole world will see when you shine
You can shine (shine)
Shine (shine)
