How Green Becomes Wood

"I feel most careers more commonly associated with women tend to be under appreciated," Dark said, earning a quietly pleased noise from his gender-studies-focused wife, "And really any service job."

Ivy grunted in confused amazement and held her arms up in the air, but didn't attempt to copy him because, frankly, it did not make sense to her.

"Or jobs held by minors or foreigners, I bet," Xander agreed. "Anyway, I intend to always try to work for myself, and even if I don't, I'm scheduling a week off every year. Maybe two to fully enjoy."

Alec grinned and held his arms up like Ivy, standing there for a moment. Then, slowly, he tipped sideways until he had to fall fast into a cartwheel. He came up holding his hands up like Ivy.

"If you work for yourself, which I think is a good thing, because small buisness matters, be sure you do what you can to acquire quality health insurance," Dark advised him, "Cooger neglected it for a time, to his detriment."

Ivy put her arms up and stomped one of her feet, looking like she was trying to figure out what he was doing but not knowing how.

"Sure," Xander lied blatantly. He knew enough to know he didn't fully understand insurance, but he still had opinions about it. Mostly thanks to his mum. He figured he'd figure that out later.

Alec grinned at Ivy. Then he did a one-handed cartwheel in the other direction. He wasn't as good at the one-handed one yet, but he didn't land on his butt this time, and he doubted Ivy would critique his form.

Dark and Daizi both politely made their remarks back to Xander, but they knew he was lying in their agreement. But they also knew he was 17, and his brain was still developing. Nobody cared and thought about insurance tat 17, and until he was 26, he would be able to stay on theirs. By then they'd have plenty of time to talk to him and get him sorted out, so there was no need for concern just yet.

After Alec finished his cartwheel, Ivy went up to him and tugged on his pant leg. "Vee?" She said, looking up at him.

Dark looked over, "Ivy, do you want to do a cartwheel, Tifla?" Then getting up, he walked over, "Are we going to put sweet Ivy-Qadira upside-down?"

"I wonder if Sloan can teach her baby gymnastics? I know they do toddler gymnastics, I've heard other moms at the baby group mention it, but I'm not sure what it entails or how old they need to be," Daizi mused.

"I think if we just twirl her upside down near the grass, that should do it," Alec confided to Dark.

Xander scratched his head. "There's a, like, tumbling class thing in the same gym as Alec's Cyr wheel class. Not at the same time, obviously, earlier in the day. Him or me could ask about it, if you want."

"I think so," Dark agreed, sitting down beside Ivy, "Okay, Ivy-Qadira, put your arms up! You have to!" Ivy turned and looked behind her at Dark when as he gently held her by her waist, "Like Alec, look."

"That would be nice, I'm always trying to find more things for her to do," Daizi replied.

Seeing Alec raise his hands, Ivy did too. Once she did, Dark said, "Okay, Ivy, one... two... three!" and then carefully flipped her over, doing his best to safely turn her over while trying to keep her looking as much like a cartwheel as possible. It would've been easier if being flipped upside down didn't make her laugh and giggle as much as it did, but it was worth nearly being kicked in his already-black eye because hearing her laugh like that soothed a long, mournful part of him.

"I should have them help me with a cartwheel next," Daizi said, turning her head towards the sound.

Alec clapped enthusiastically and then turned a cartwheel with her. "Yay, Ivy! You're spinning! Whee!"

"I think you might be a little tall for you to do it the way Ivy is," Xander said dryly. "Otherwise, you'll be great."

With Ivy laughing as hard as she was, Dark just went ahead and spun her again.

"I can't speak to that," Daizi replied, "but I like to believe I take direction better than my toddler does."

Xander snorted. "Next you'll be telling me you're too old to wear dangle earrings or tease us. Sloan's not a random 18 year old, and she wants to teach people. I think it'll be cool since you're the parent of her friend."
