How Green Becomes Wood

"Maybe," Daizi agreed, but wasn't sure if that sounded right to her, "I think... When it's not a big anniversary for Dark and I, when it's like... seven years, or something, I don't really stop to marvel on how it's already been seven years. Even though I knew how long we had been married on our seventh anniversary, I wasn't astounded by the number. It just felt natural for it to have been so long."

"The fact that it's really nice and shiny and a good car is what makes it stand out," Xander drawled.

The twins waited until Ivy was in the car. Then they piled in with her and flopped back, utterly exhausted. Time for a good, long break!

In the car, since it was her turn, Daizi put on some music, and settled back in her seat and hummed along as they drove home. Like she often did, she reached over and rubbed little circles on the back of Dark's neck and on his shoulders. At red lights, he sometimes held her hand. There wasn't much to say: it had been a good day. They were tired, somewhat dreading their evening chores, but glad for it all.

Once they made it home, Ivy was brought inside and lay down in her crib upstairs, while Enkidu was fed, walked, and loved. Their home was quiet but comfortable. It wasn't quite late enough for adults, or near adults, to go to bed, but it was near enough to then for anything productive. While Daizi showered, Dark settled down on the couch and went through the pictures he had taken, sending them off to the relevant family members.

Then, finally, he stretched and went upstairs to get ready for bed, passing by his wife who was lying in their bed, her hair still damp.

"You look like a painting," Dark admired.

"Stop," She chuckled but only slightly changed her position.

"What are you doing?"

"Just thinking."

"Only good things, I hope," Dark told her as he went into the bathroom while Daizi made some comment teasing him for being an optimist.

When he came out of the bathroom and climbed into bed, like a magnet Daizi rolled over and cuddled against him, resting her head on his chest.

"I hate when you get into bed with wet hair," Dark grumbled sweetly, running his fingers through it anyway, although it tangled more easily.

"You came up sooner than I thought you would," She shrugged, shutting her eyes.

"Let me braid it for you, at least."

"Not just yet, I don't want to sit up," Daizi sighed, snuggling closer against him. Since she was much too cute to argue against, Dark simply pulled the blanket over her and held her in the arms. Their sleepy, comfortable silence was only broken by Daizi asking, "Are you happy, Goose?" Dark's eyes flew open but only managed to begin a stumbled question in response before Daizi said, "I didn't mean it like that, I'm sorry it came out wrong!"

"I can think of few more anxiety inducing questions than that," He told her.

"I know, I'm sorry! I just... I just meant that I am happy. It just occurred to me today... I don't remember the last time I cried. I used to cry all the time, but now... and I don't even remember when I stopped." She yawned, snuggling in against him. "I'm happy, Goose."

Her tone was so sleepy and cozy, it made Dark's throat tighten. All he could do was hug her tightly and say, "I love you, Daizi."

"I love you too," Daizi hummed, kissing whichever part of him was nearest. It wasn't lost on her that he hadn't used her nickname. "Are you happy, Goose?"

He thought this question over. Happiness had never been an uncomplicated emotion for him, but... It wasn't really a complicated answer. Not this time. "Yes, I am. I really am."

"Do you still worry about when the next catastrophe will be?"

This, too, was an uncomplicated answer, "Yes, I do."

"I don't anymore," Daizi admitted, relishing in the sound of his heartbeat, "Not really. I think we're okay, and I'm glad I get to be with you."

"You are the only one I would ever want to be with." Dark told her, and they spoke sweetly to one another as lovers do until they fell asleep exactly as they lay, wet hair be damned.

When they got home, Kiki heard them come in and came running to greet them, calling out with her squeaky call. She climbed up into Alec's arms and settled into happy purring, rubbing against his face. She missed him! She liked the other people well enough, but this was her person! She wasn't used to him being gone that long. Alec snuggled her and crooned to her, happy to have a pet who missed him. It was nice to be missed! Xander rolled his eyes but did give the cat a little scratch behind the ears.

When they went to bed, they dreamed of exotic animals and making stuff with chemistry sets. It had been an amazing day! They were utterly exhausted and happy. They'd also discover in the morning that they both had light sunburns. That was annoying, but not terrible. They'd had had far worse! Then it was back to school where they teased Peter about kangaroos, and he teased them about being too light-skinned even for America. He dreaded to think what they'd look like if they went to Australia. Becky just laughed and demanded to see their pictures.

Senior skip day crept up on them. It didn't have anything to do with the twins except that they wouldn't see Sloan that day. Rumy texted Sloan and asked if she wanted to hang during that day, going to the mall and maybe catching a matinee. There wasn't anything particularly good on, but it could be fun to sit in the back of an empty theater and riff on the movie. Or really anything. She didn't care.

Plenty of seniors had their parents knowingly call them out sick on Senior Skip Day. Sloan had spent all month swearing up and down she wasn't going to go the coward's way out, she was going to actually, properly skip school. It wasn't something she'd ever done before, but with two weeks left of high school, this was the time to do it. Her plan was simply to leave the house like she was driving to school, then just not show up. It was simple, classy, easy.

Until the day came, and suddenly she was too afraid to go through with it. She still didn't want to ask permission to formally skip, but she couldn't let herself not show up without the school knowing, because what would she do if they called her mom? So, she compromised with herself and faked an illness. That way her mom would call her out, but she was still lying. She was like Ferris Bueller!

Then, after her mom went to work, she was able to leave. Going to the movies sounded great---maybe not quite as exhilarating as everything Ferris did, but still a healthy dose of rebellion!

Rumy met Sloan at the movie theater and grinned when she saw her. "You totally didn't fully skip, did you?" she teased Sloan. She was in flared black cyberpunk-style pants with silver stitching and a black and silver oversized poncho over her black, long-sleeved shirt. She had fully skipped. It wasn't her first time, but it wasn't something she commonly did, either.

Rumy laughed. "Nice! Well, we have our options. We can go watch a spy movie with lots of explosions and stuff, or we can watch a man try to save his ranch and win the city girl's heart, or we can watch a teen buy a new car that has an alien monster living in it like a hermit crab." She brushed her dark, curly hair behind her ear, making her gear-shaped earrings gleam, smilingas she did so. She recognized thT she had zero chance with Sloan, and that they were just friends, but she still really liked Sloan and couldn't resist dressing up just a little when they hung out. After high school, they'd never see each other again, so what was the harm in enjoying a little crush?
