Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

she nodded "He is a good man, we may not be able to talk but I feel I understand him more and respect him for it" she signed and looked over at him for a moment "Will you tell him that for me?"

Lynna smiled. "I can do that." She turned to Badru. "Badru? Justira wants me to tell you she really likes and respects you. And she doesn't mind not being able to talk to you."

Badru tipped his head curiously then smiled and nodded. "I appreciate her," he rumbled softly. "She is a good woman."

Justira watched Badru as Lynna translated for her so that she could read Badru's lips when he answered. His response made her smile . It hadn't been a great first impression when they first met but things had settled.

"Thank you" she signed to Lynna, bot to her and Badru. She didn't really have more to say

Lynna yawned and settled back to watch the rabbit as Justira prepared it. "This is nice. The whole 'feeling for our lives' thing was not fun, but it was kind of nice to have a goal in mind, to travel, and to see new places. "She spoke aloud and signed so both Badru and Justira could understand her.

Justira smiled, catching most of it but she was focusing on making their food. She didn't respond until she got to a good stopping point "I am glad you have a good attitude about it, I know how hard all of this has been, it is hard being displaced from your home"

"Lucky me, I was already looking to be displaced," Lynna sighed. "The bad part is, now that I am displaced, I'm starting to realize that my old home wasn't so bad as I thought."

Justira offered an understanding smile "dwelling on the past is never good. Find the good and make it better" she signed "you are adapting well here. You learn fast. It will feel like home before long. I think you will be happy"

"It's just the truth" she signed before looking back at the rabbit she was cooking over the fire, no pot so it was roasting on a spit in chunks "Good I think, should take a half hour or so" she signed "Time to relax before we eat"

"Then what should we do for half an hour?" Lynna wondered.

Badru was picking up sticks from around them and creating a pile near the fire, both to make it easy to use them and to dry the slightly damper ones. Some he added to the stash he carried.

"Find me four straight sticks, we can stretch this rabbit fur and strap it to one of the packs to tan while we travel" she signed, already looking for something she could use for string to tie it on. waste not, rabbit furs were very nice for winter use

Lynna found six sticks and held them out to Justira. The extras were in case one broke or weren't what Justira was looking for.

Justira set to work making the frame then stretched the rabbits fur over it and secured it to the frame, she'd done it many times before so it didn't take her long but she did slow down so she could show Lynna exactly what she was doing and explained her reasonings, passing on her knowledge

Lynna listened attentively - or rather watched Lynna's hands - and she nodded and tried to remember everything Justira did. Justira and Badru couldn't be the only ones in the group to know how to do these essential survival skills. She needed to pull her weight, too, here and back home.

Which was exactly why Justira was showing her what to do. She she finished she tied it to the back of her bag then signed "Next time you can do it and I'll watch" she said and offered a smile before turning the rabbit over to finish cooking

she smiled "there will be, rabbits breed often and grow quickly" she signed, made them a good source for food.

Soon she pulled the meat off and served it up on some large mostly dried leaves she had picked up, offering them each a portion of meat "Why don't we have some of that bread with it?" she signed to Lynna

"If rabbits breed so easily and so well," Lynna said thoughtfully as she watched the fat drip from the meat and sizzle in the fire, "then what if we found a way to capture a few and made them like... pets, but for eating. What's that word... Oh! Domesticate. We could domesticate the rabbits for our cunsumption. That could work, right? If we could get a proper rabbit set up.

"That is possible," Badru agreed, making Lynna jump. He'd been so quiet, she'd almost forgotten he was there. "I have not done it, but is possible."

Lynna grinned and pulled out the bread to share between them. "What do you think, Justira?"

she nodded "I have known other clans to do it, it is a good plan for spring" she reasoned "We would have a hard time feeding them through this winter, better to let them find their own food for winter, in the mean time we could perhaps set up something for that" she signed

Lynna grinned, delighted that one of her ideas worked! "Yeah, you're right, best to wait until spring. Then who knows? Maybe we could catch some pregnant bunnies!" She settled back, thinking about ways to make a bunny house work.
