The Vampire's Apprentice

Sam dodged and lagged, but finally obeyed and hopped in, climbing up to sit in the backseat instead of his usual bed in the far back. He plopped himself down and stared attentively out the windshield.

Kitty opted to open the window so Sam could stick his head out—but not so far he might tumble out—and they were once more on their merry way. To the Liberty Bell, and then homeward bound.

Sam happily stuck his head out and let his tongue hang out, giving his best doggy grin.
"Looks like someone's happy to get in the car now that he's actually in it," Norville grinned, watching the dog.

Norville glanced back at the dog. "You are with him, so I think as far as he's concerned, even the car can be home. Not to mention, after living on the streets, even riding in the car every day is a luxury."

Norville stretched and settled down, staring out the window a bit like Sam as he watched the scenery go by. The Liberty Bell wasn't far, and he was looking forward to seeing it.

As it turned out, they were not the only ones wishing to see the bell. Not by a long shot; it was crowded. Grassy area with brick paths leading up to this long glass building, a whole bunch of tall, business-like structures looming behind it, and the Independence Hall to the left.

Sam clung to Kitty's leg, whining softly. Crowds frightened him. He was used to getting kicked out of the way in a crowd. Norville stood on Kitty's other side, keeping on hand on her arm so they wouldn't get separated.
"Man! Who knew an old bell would get so popular?" he grinned.

"I know, right?" She agreed. This bell was so precious, in fact, that there was screening to prevent weapons and... pepper spray from getting through. Inside, there was AC, a beautifully stark contrast to the outdoor heat. Even though it was still a bit early in the day, warmth was on the rise.

It was like any other museum; an isle with nooks to the left and right, signs telling about history with bell-shaped cutouts. After this, on the left, was a square area that had quite a few people scattered around it. Most of them were taking pictures or making videos, but the whole place was somehow eerily quiet. Like a library, almost.

Interestingly, Sam was allowed inside, maybe because there was not a good place to leave him outside, and he was staying close to Kitty. A well-behaved dog. And with Norville in a cast, the assumption might have been made that he was some kind of service dog.

"Wow!" Norville whispered. "This place is place is... pristine!"

"Clearly you have not seen Clancy's workspace if you think this place is clean," Kitty jested, nudging him gently with her elbow.

"Really? He has a workspace?" Norville said in surprise. Then he shrugged. "Must be clean. But... why all the security? It's a really, really heavy bell, and a cracked one, at that."

She chuckled.

"You know, I wondered the exact same thing." Kitty agreed. "But, I mean, if people in books make off with the Eiffel Tower, who's to say the Liberty Bell is any different?"

"Count Victor Lustig, apparently." Kitty told him, half-examining one of the informal signs. "He sold it to scrap metal workers twice. Pretty impressive." She thought about it for a moment longer. "He almost reminds me of Clancy, if Clancy were a thief instead of undead. Similar intelligence." The girl tapped the side of her head, above her ear.

"Hmm, Count Victor Lustig?" Norville grinned. "How do you know it wasn't him? And that's pretty awesome. I wonder if that's happened to any other landmarks? Like the Golden Gate Bridge?"
