The Vampire's Apprentice

Clancy gave her an amused look. "Would you feel if I did some research into some of the skills and presented you with my findings?"

"Alright, very well," he said, shaking his head in amusement. "I will do so." He rose. "I believe that was three questions, and I must get to work. Oh, I will have a list of chores for you to do tomorrow, so please be prepared for that."

"I will always be prepared." Kitty answered, pulling the pencil from behind her ear and standing as well. "Do have a good night."

"And you as well, Miss Kitty. Try not to stay up too late. I am sorry that I cannot spend more leisure time with you this evening," he said as he ascended the steps, sounding genuinely regretful.

"Hmm," Clancy murmured enegmatically. "Sleep well." He glanced down at Sam, who had followed them. "Yes, you as well, hound. Go away."
Sam gave Clancy the equivalent of a doggy smile and willingly trotted to Kitty's room.

Kitty let Sam in, then cracked the door before sprawling across her bed. She yawned, spent a little bit writing down answers, and finally crawled under the covers. Her sleep was restless, but she did not wake.

Clancy waited until he thought Kitty was asleep or at least had her light out. Then he opened Mrs. Mooney's letter and read quickly. A brow bounced, but then he gave a slight nod before rising and heading downstairs. He called the neighbor and stood in his bedroom to not disturb Kitty.

"Ah, Mrs. Mooney! I do apologize for the lateness. I was waiting for her to fall asleep. As for your condition... yes, I can agree to those terms. Yes, thank you. As for our potential plans..."

He talked and worked through the night, shutting Kitty's door and keeping as quiet as possible. It was a bit of a rushed job in some areas, but that could not be helped. Adjustments could be made later. Finally, just before sunrise, he disappeared into the basement, smiling to himself in anticipation of the next day.

Sam woke up and stood his front paws on Kitty's bed, staring down at her. He didn't bark or paw, just stared. He needed to go outside, please.

Kitty shifted, pulling herself further under the covers. After a moment, she groaned. The girl climbed out of bed and groggily made her way downstairs to let Sam out.

Sam gave a soft gruff of happiness as he thundered down the stairs and trotted straight to the door. Being a dog, he did not notice or particularly care that the broken cabinets had been carefully repaired, and the broken chair had been replaced. Unfortuneately, the new chair did not match the couch or old chair, but that had been solved by slip covers in a warm grey (if there was such a thing) fitted over all three. Everything was clean and pristine, not a dent or a scratch out of place.

On the kitchen table, there was a note waiting for Kitty, folded so only the white showed, and on that white read, "Before breakfast!" He'd never dictated she read a note before she'd even eaten before, so it must be important.

She let Sam out, glancing at the repair of the place only briefly before examining the note. "Curious...." Kitty mumbled to herself, opening it carefully.

Miss Kitty,
I recall that it is your birthday this day, but unfortuneately, there is much that needs to be done. However, as a token of this special day, I have arranged for you to eat breakfast at the diner where you and I once went during one of our official talks. I am sure you remember the place. I have laid out an outfit for you on my bed. Please wear it and go to the diner and sit in my old spot.
More instructions will follow. Be certain to follow each one to the letter, no matter how strange it may seem to you. This is of utmost importance: Follow the instructions!

Happy Birthday,
Clancy McCleary

It was a soft green dress of a sort of Bohemian flare to it, but still modest as it would hang down to just above her ankles with a flowing hem and light sleeves down to her elbows. Light striping gave it some visual texture without making her look like a green zebra, and the fabric was soft and supple to the touch. A light knit sweater matched it, as did the shoes and the brimmed hat laying beside it. A small clutch purse on a thin strap completed the casual yet elegant ensemble that would not have looked out of place at a semi formal event or the beach. A few dollars for breakfast were in the purse.

She was almost hesitant to touch the soft fabric. Such a thing could not possibly have been real, could it? Gently, she brushed her fingers against the hem of the dress, a smile creeping onto her face. It wasn't her imagination. This caused a few giggles of excitement, though Kitty refrained from putting it on until after she had brushed her teeth and her hair, afterwards clipping Sam to his leash and making sure the door was locked before she stepped off the porch, heading to where breakfast lay in wait. There was most certainly a skip in her step and freedom to her movement as she made her way down to the diner, curiosity leading her onward.

The diner was moderately busy, yet still laid back. The patrons barely gave her a glance other than a couple of males looking her over appreciatively before turning back to their meals, and the woman studied her as if trying to decipher where her outfit had come from and if it would work on them. Kitty struck a lovely figure, refreshing as a spring day.

Clancy's usual spot was open, and the waitress was bustling over before Kitty and Sam could even properly settle. "Well, hello, darlin'! Aren't you a pretty sight today. Where's that handsome cousin of yours?" she grinned around some chewing gum.

The reminder that they were "cousins" brought forth a smile. "He's at home, sleeping. Nice to see you again, though. How've you been?"

"I've been peachy keen, darlin'! Thanks for askin'!" She gave her a wink. "But a little red-headed bird tells me you are having a very special day today."
