Land Down Under (KJDarKnight & Treasure)

Pepper laughed a little "on it. We'll all need the energy sounds like"

She headed back into the kitchen to whip something together for everyone.

"Well if they don't listen they will quickly learn their lesson when the storm hits"

"Yep," Jonah agreed.

"Need any help?" Lynna asked Pepper.

~~

Up top, Badru walked calmly through the people, carrying a massive sack over his shoulder. Where he'd gotten the sack was anyone's gues, but it was stuffed to the point of straining the seams.

"Sure" Pepper nodded and moved aside so she could step on and help prep the meal. Nothing fresh this time. Pre packaged for quick meals.

--

Mathias noticed him and raised his brows, watching a moment before walking over "what have you got there Badru?"

Lynna stepped up - relieved to see the packages - and willingly lent a hand.

~~

Badru slung the sack off his shoulder and set it before Mathias. "Food. A storm comes. People hungry. Need feed," he rumbled.

Mathias nodded "that's great Badru. Good thinking" he praised before pointing out the tent set up for the kitchen stuff, near the small bunker where the supplies were stored "show them what to do"

Badru grunted and picked up the sack. He strode to the tent and set the sack down long enough to get his bearings. "Someone here?" he asked the tent.

There were a handful of people there trying to figure put how to feed everyone.

One young man nearest the front stared blatantly at the giant. He himself was a bit thin and lanky with a pair of glasses perched on his nose "oh yeah..." he blinked and pushed his glasses up. The front and two side of the tent rolled up to let air flow while the weather was good

Badru went to the young fellow since he was the first to speak, looming over him. His dark, sollumn eyes stared down at him. "You know how cooking?" He presented the sack. "No, then I show."

He looked down at the sack of food then up at the giant. "No idea" he admitted and stepped aside "by uh..all means show me"

Badru grunted and started unloading the fruits, nuts, berries, roots, fungi, and vegetables he'd found. No meat, but that would have to come later. For now, he had to figure out how to make things stretch as far as possible. He pointed to the boy. "Water boil in big, big bowl," he instructed. "Then chop things."

The boy was quick to respond to the orders. He looked to be just barely an adult eighteen most likely. He started the water and told a couple of the others to get chopping. They had been too busy staring at Badru. The boy more brave than the adults in the tent.

Badru observed everything closely for a while then turned to the boy. "Need fire and pan." He paused and studied the boy, ignoring the others in the tent. "Name?"

"Oh sorry. I'm uh, Charlie" he answered "we got pans over here uhm...I don't know how to start a fire.." he admitted, kind of a bad idea below ground

Badru grunted. Ah. Of course not. He looked around then pointed to Charles. "You. In charge. When these and these roots are chopped, put them in water. I get fire." He walked out and went to find wood to start the fire. He didn't have far to look and started busily building a fire pit just outside the tent, making certain was close enough for convenience but not so close as to catch anything on fire.

Charlie nodded and watched him a moment before he went back to helping chop food and keep things going. With so many helping it didn't take super long to get things chopped and in the pot to cook

Badru showed Charlie how to start the fire then instructed him how to boil some of the goods, steaming others by placing a screen over the boiling water and putting the veggies on that, and frying others. It was an intense cooking class that turned out four different vegetarian meals, each of which could feed ten to twenty people depending on portion size. He focused on Charles, showing him as much as he could, distracting himself from other thoughts. Like worry for Pepper. He had no right to worry for her. It was not his place.

Charlie turned out to be a good student and eager to learn as he followed Badru's direction and helped the others figure it out too. By the time they finished everyone was hungry and anxious to eat

It was a lot of food, but it was not enough to stretch to everyone. Badru ensured that those in need got the fresh food first, trying to make it last as long as possible. It was all one man could get in short notice, but it would help stretch their rations of the prepackaged stuff a little farther. Every little bit counted when he could not be certain how long the storm would last. As an experienced Top Dweller, he could tell enough to figure it would not be a bad one, but there were always storms that changed.

Finally, after a long long day, everything was done. Most of the shelters had been set up, and the rest would be finished early the next day. They would be safe. Probably scared out of their minds, but safe.

Lynna sat slumped near Misty's corner, exhausted. Jonah lay on the floor where he'd slept, equally tired and aching. Badru sat on the floor at the end of the couch, and Gray stood quietly in the darkest corner. It seemed a somber group for everything that had been acomplished so far.

Misty settled down in her corner qnd opened the wooden box, smiling to herself. Whatever it was it had made her happy to have it again.

"We did good today.." Mathias commented as he sat down in his chair to relax
