Smugglers Cove (Love2write and Silence)

Anna watched Kato get up from the table and frowned. "No no..." Reaching out she tried to grab his arm. "You sit down." She was getting worried about him and all those long hours. Not to mention the cough. It sounded like those that the Chips had.

He looked down at her. "But your back..."

"It won't do me any good to have a doctor if you run yourself into the ground." Anna peered into his eyes. "You're tired and I know that. I've lived with you for a while now."

Kato chuckles lightly. "Not so tired that'd let you sit there suffering. I'll be right back." He pats her hand and gets the salve and shot from the bedroom. He returned and gently lifted her out of the wheelchair onto an actual chair for easier access to her back. "What did you do today?" He asked to help distract her. He inserted the shot into her lower spine the immediatly rubbed the salve on it and massage the muscle to help the pain from the shot fade quicker.

There was no stopping the man and she knew it. Anna sighed and waited for him to get all the stuff. Wincing a little she felt him begin to lift her from the chair and he had to push her shirt up a little bit. "Went to Star's for a little bit and I found out that pretty much the Chippequoti have a stick up their ass." Wincing again she felt the shot go into her spine. "They are some of the most stuck up and full of themselves, self righteous bastards and they're not even right!"

Kato lowers her shirt and goes to the sink to wash the salve off his hand. "What makes you say that?"

"They got this whole messed up bloodline thing. You marry based on class and basically they think Killian did the worst thing possible marrying or mating with Star. Whatever they would call it." Anna growled a little. "Its just plain stupid if you ask me."

"Hmm, well, you realize there is actual science behind it." Kato sits back down at the table and picks up his roll again, taking a big bite. "If they didn't manage their bloodlines in some fashion, the bones would become so dense it would kill the children before they reached a certain age. Too weak and their immune system fails."

"So do you think that Claire will have problems?" Anna could actually see some of the sense of it and she felt a little bad for encouraging Sooni in a direction that wouldn't be good. "I mean would it work better if they have to breed 'lower' to breed outside of their own kind?"

"That, I do not know. Perhaps...but as you saw with Star, Claire nearly died because her mother's body was not capable of producing the right nutrients. Producing children outside their own race might be far more risky."

Anna sighed. "So they're basically a dying race then. They don't have enough here to choose the appropriate mates and....Well it means that there won't be anymore. Its kinda sad. You know I was just starting to think I might like a few things about the Chippequoti." Once the pain faded out of her back she shifted on the chair a little. "When you're done eating we're going to bed."

"Yes...that is the plan. Unless there is another emergency." Kato sighed, eating slower than his body wanted him to.

"You can't have anymore emergencies." Lowering her head she tried to get a good look at his face. "Kato you're going to get sick if you keep pushing yourself and don't think I haven't noticed that little cough coming on."

Kato smiled kindly at her. "I appreciate your concern. Trust me, I won't go unless I have to." A knock sounded at the door and his expression fell. He patted Anna's shoulder and went to it to door. Shanti stood there looking worried. "I'm sorry, Doctor Kato. I know its late. But...you need to see this." She showed him a data pad. Kato's eyes narrowed. "This isn't right. How many people have been tested? "I've been going around the colony for the last two days taking blood tests. The chips are fine but...I think there's something in the water that the filters aren't getting...or maybe its in the animals...I don't know." "Has Wittick seen this?" "Yes, but he's been so busy trying to help the chippequoti doctor repair the vocal cords. And Dr. Knett only knows the basics of medical. I only noticed it because several people have been coming by complaining of nausea but with no symptoms of the flu." "Coughing?" Kato asked. "A few, but not a majority." Kato sighed. "We need to find out where this virus is stemming from and what sort of anti-biotics we need to use. Also, run the virus through a simulation. I want to know if this..." "I already did, Doctor." Shanti shifted. Kato met her eyes. "Its deadly?" "It could be, but we don't have enough data to know for sure yet." He sighed and nodded. "Ok, well." He handed the datapad back to her. "We'll get to work on this in the morning. Thankyou for being so vigilante, Shanti." The nurse nodded. "Good night, Doctor." Kato returned back to Anna. He wasn't certain if she'd eavesdropped or not but for now he didn't want to worry her. "Just Shanti. She wanted to check some bloodwork by me."

"Really, just some blood work?" Anna raised an eyebrow. She knew he was hiding something, but his work didn't always allow for him to tell her every detail. Patients and doctors had a sort of agreement about not sharing information. "Well it must have been pretty serious to interrupt you at home." She watched as he seemingly ate slower and slower. "Honey, if you're that tired just roll me into the room and you get to bed. I can get myself in the bed if I need to."

Kato sighs and nods. He stands, coughing to the side then lifting her out of her chair and back into the wheelchair. As he rolls her to the bed. As he helps her out of the chair and into the bed he says, "I think I'm going to sleep in the other room tonight. I don't want you too get sick too if this is more than just a tickle in my throat."

Sadly brushing his hair with her fingers she sighed. "And if it really is bad who is going to call the doctor in the morning? Most things are contagious days before the symptoms show. You might as well stay with me."

He tucked her in and stroked her forehead. "Better safe than sorry." The tests from Shanti had him concerned. If did have some sort of strange virus he didn't want to risk infecting her if hadn't already. He grabbed his pillow and a blanket. "Press the button if you need me." He stopped at the door. "I love you, sleep well."

"Ok I love you to." Anna waited till he was out of the room to sit up. Her clothes were still on and he forgot to let her change. It would have to be fine for tonight.

*****************************************************

Witteck came to the office early the next morning. He'd been up half the night studying the virus. There were portions of it that had been familiar and yet it seemed to be new. If that was the case he needed to know who it would affect and how. When the door opened he nodded to Kato. "We might need to quarantine any patients with this virus till I know the extent of it."

"I agree." Kato came and sat across from him. "I'm afraid I may be one of those as well." He coughed again, glad he'd decided to wear a medical mask for the time being. The cough had gotten more painful during the night. "If we havn't started already, we should test everyone. The question is...where are we going to set up the quarantine if there are more than a handful of people infected?"

The older doctor shook his head. He'd been sweating and he was trying to work against the clock before he succumbed to it as well. "We can't test the patients ourselves then till we know if we are presenting early signs or not." Witteck took a vial and drew a little blood from himself. "For starts I'd like to point out that both of us were in close contact with many of the ill. There was no sickness until the Chippequoti arrived." Taking a deep breath he thought for another minute. "I think we'll have to consider in home quarantines if we find more than 50 people that are infected."

Kato nodded approvingly then thought over Wittieck's observation. "You're thinking that this virus could be mutated from the Chippequoti coughing virus? That could be very serious...humans don't have the same sort of immune system as Chippequoti.

"I don't know." Witteck thought for a moment. "There aren't any coincidences, but I think there may be a link." He waited for a few minutes to get his blood test result and grabbed Kato's arm. "Lets see where we're at with you and if you're infected then we need to wait here till the Chippequoti doctor comes in."

Kato sighed and shook his head. "This colony can't run with just two doctors. There are still so many people in need of aid. And I have pregnant woman with gestational diabetes that needs checking on regularly."

"Do you want to risk getting her sick!" Witteck stood up from his place. "We'll have to do our best to find out how many are infected, find out how serious it is and then do what we must. Some illnesses cause mutations and you should know that doctor." The older man sat down and sighed. He knew he had lost his temper and after many days of little sleep it was not surprising though he was disgusted with himself.

Kato blinked. Not once had he ever seen Witteck lose his temper. "I am aware of that. I suppose I was trying to make a point that we need help. Perhaps we should ask Killian to locate a couple more doctors that can help us with this quarantine."

"And how do we know he's not sick?" Witteck sat down again. "We'll make a mass call for everyone to be checked. Those who aren't sick I'll test the virus against it to see if they have an immunity. If there is then we know who will be safe to allow out of the community or to use direct link messaging to instruct them in the care of patients." A slight grin came to his face. "Trusting a man with short term memory loss."

Kato smirked. "Yeah. Probably not the best idea. Maybe we should talk to Star instead...granted she's not infected yet too." He looked up as Shanti came in with the Chippequoti doctor, Quill. She was wearing a mask to protect herself as well. "Dr. Witteck, Dr. Kato...neither of you appear to being doing that well. Is that the reason for this meeting?" Quill asked, sitting across from them. She didn't look to worried about catching whatever they had.

No sooner had they seemed to recognize the problem for what it was when she stepped in. Witteck shrugged. "More or less." The woman smiled and nodded. "I already tested myself after I had the cough. I am immune. Any Chippequoti, which was all of them will be immune. There is no need to seek outside help. I can write directives if need be for the Chippequoti to take care of the humans." She was reluctant as the rest of them to introduce any outside influence at this point. "I believe testing the human population would be beneficial to your kind."

Kato nodded. "As do we." He guestured to Shanti. "Shanti thus far has managed to evade contact with the virus. She can begin helping you, and any other Chips who are willing to help, testing everyone who hasn't been tested yet. Which is how many?"

Shanti looked over at them. "My test group was 25 people. 10 out of the 25 were not yet infected."

Quill smiled. "Good then we'll begin this morning and I will ask you Witteck to return to your home and Kato remain here till Sooni brings Anna to the clinic to be tested." She had half a feeling that Kato had already infected his little woman. Humans were so very delicate.

Seemed that the more they tested the humans the more they found of those who were ill. The Chippequoti doctor listed symptoms of varying stages. It was the same virus, but some of her patients had developed a very strange borderline psychosis response. They were hallucinating. Something that she had thought would have indicated the need for help earlier.

Glancing back into the lab where the other two doctors were geared up and instructing Chippequoti on how to run the tests she noticed an odd look on Kato's face when his Anna came in. Quill cleaned a spot on the little woman's arm and pricked her with a needle before she drew the blood and marked the vial. It was set aside in a box with many other samples. In a few minutes it would go to the back for others to be tested. She suspected that anyone who had been in close contact with the Chips or other humans had been infected. Patients were sent to a waiting room where they would learn if they were infected or not and encouraged not to touch one another. Everyone wore masks until they were ushered home by a Chip that would care for them and all in the household that was infected or until they were deemed well. If they were well they were given a list of symptoms to watch for and sent home.

Since Star and Claire were not full blooded Chippeqouti Killian had to take them into the clinic. Of course they had Claire tested first and the baby wailed all through it and beyond as if someone had tried to murder her. Nervously Killian waited while they drew Star's blood and then he was ushered to the room to wait with them. Nobody knew the full extent just had a list of information that he could barely read. The word hallucinations stuck out and he had trouble reading it, soon as Star said it out loud he knew what it was and he felt sick to his stomach.

Anna saw plenty of familiar faces in the room while she waited. It may have been tempting to wave and say hi, but she didn't feel quite up to it. Instead she waited till a Chippequoti came out with Kato. Sooni was taking them home and it seemed to be indication enough. Glancing over at Kato she winked. "Oh how cute. We get to be sick together."

Star held Claire tightly as the poor baby screamed and writhed in her arms during the blood test.
"How many are infected so far?" Star asked.
"40." Shanti replied in her normal blunt tone.
"40? Out of how many?"
Shanti pulled vial and put it in the bucket with the others. "We've only tested 70 so far."
Star gaped. "That many? Is it serious?"
"We're not sure yet. It could be. Have you been experiencing any symptoms?"
"Uh..." This woman had a terrible bedside manner. "Coughing. Feeling a bit like I got the flu."
Shanti nodded and jotted down a few notes in her datapad. "Any unusual blood flow, headaches, dizziness, spots, hallucinations? That sort of thing?"
"Uh...no." Star swallowed.
Shanti recorded that as well then sent a list of symptoms to Star's datapad to be looking out for.
Waiting in the room with Claire wailing in her arms and Killian looking at her like he was sick himself, just made the entire experience that much more unpleasant. Eventually she learned that she was infected to but Killian was immune. That made her feel a little better, but in his condition she couldn't fully relax. What if Claire needed caring for and she couldn't help the babe?

Kato wasn't able to share Anna's enthusiasm. Mostly because he was already feeling the effects of the virus, but also because he felt guilty about getting Anna sick as well. He was also terrified that this virus would become something more than they could deal with. If it hadn't been for Shanti though...they likely wouldn't have had this much notice. A manages a small smile at her. "Well, I guess you're going to get me on vacation after all."

************************************************************************************************
Word of the virus spread like wild-fire and with it the rising panic. Where had it come from? Was it serious? Were people going to start dying? Where was the cure? Why were the chippequoti not getting sick? Was this from them? Why were there chippequoti in the homes of the quarantined humans? It took the voices of people currently not sick like Frank and Lisa to keep them calm and give them as many answers as necessary. With Star down and Killian helping her, those two had become the liaison between the chip's and the human colonists.

In the course of three days the once previously innocent symptoms of coughing and fevers had become far more severe. Many of those who had been infected earliest had been violent towards their chippequoti care takers and often had to be restrained to keep them from harming themselves. The yells and screams of their neighbors had increased the panic of the rest of the colonists. Everyone was on edge. The colony was a powder-keg waiting for the match that would unleash the barley restrained chaos.

Anna woke the third morning to Kato yelling at her and shaking her shoulders violently. "NO! Don't die!" He sobbed. "I was going to marry you. Stay with me, Anna. Anna!" Sweat dripped down his face, his eyes wide in terror, his knuckles were white as he gripped her shoulders. Sooni rushed into the room and pulled him off of her, holding him tightly while Anna tried to calm him down.
"Hey I'm here." Anna tried to sit up, but she couldn't and her legs were still far too weak to push against him very hard. She'd barely managed to move them by herself. 'Kato!" The Chip woman came in and held him down while Anna stroked his face. "I'm still here." Turning her head she coughed a little. "Calm down."
"Anna." Kato clutched her hand, holding it close. He finally calmed and Sooni cautiously released him, giving Anna a concerned look as if asking if she should take him away to another room. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." Kato moaned laying back down still holding her hand tightly. "Please don't die. I need you....don't die..."
Grabbing the opposite side of Kato, Anna pulled herself closer to him. She glanced back at Sooni and shook her head. "I'll be fine for now." Since she didn't have to worry about getting sick anymore she kissed him. "I'm a long ways from dying or leaving you." Anna took one of his hands and placed it on her head. "Just remember I'm here ok?"
Kato nodded wearily, stroking her hair. "I'm sorry I didn't trust you. I'm sorry I nearly left you. I hurt you...you were just trying to do the right thing. When you needed me most I was cold and unkind. Forgive me." He pleaded in his feverish state.
All his feverish rambling started to get to her and Anna put a hand over his mouth. "Just stop it. We've been through all this before. You had a whole heck of a lot more to forgive. You're sick and probably hallucinating."
Sooni stood close by with a sedative. She watched Anna and Kato in awe. A simple gesture and touch had brought him down from panicking and near violent to calm. While chippequoti touched one another, the tenderness with which humans treated one another was on a whole other level. Kato put a hand on her waist and nodded silently, before drifting back off to sleep. Sooni grabbed her datapad. "Are you alright? Did he hurt you?"
She was about to close her eyes and rest some more when the Chippequoti woman spoke up. Anna shook her head. "I'm fine." Her shoulder hurt, but it was likely little more than a bruise. "You can rest. I'll call if we need anything. I've still got my brains about me for a few days."
Sooni looked hesitant but nodded and returned to her room.
****
Star's symptoms were mild compared to those she was hearing about around her. She had a painful cough and a fever. But aside from it feeling like a severe flu that drained her energy, the chippequoti blood was doing its work to combat the worst of the virus. She smiled lightly at Killian as he came in with food and water and helped her sit up to eat. "Hey, how's Claire and the others?" She drank the glass in a few seconds and still felt thirsty.

Killian could barely sleep at night. His dreams were coming back with a vengeance and now they were mixed with Star and Claire. Between the baby's cries and Star's sweats it was impossible to sleep. Then his head started to hurt more. The doctor wrote on his chart that he had cracked his skull and that explained many of the headaches that still hung around.

Thankfully Frank and Lisa had managed to stay clear of the virus. They were more helpful than Killian could have been. He didn't remember conversations with anyone outside of Star, Sooni, and Kato. That doctor was always talking about something and muttering about his proposal that didn't go right. Stepping into the room with Star he set her little food tray down on the bed and grinned as best he could. "Claire is fine." Gently patting the little pack he had her in he turned so Star could see the baby nestled in next to his chest and taking her nap. "When you finish I got to go give Kato his bath. Seems like the entire colony is about to erupt. Chips are tired of the humans and humans are tired of the Chippequoti."

Leaning closer he kissed her and winked. "Good thing is that I won't be getting sick. Already had my little cough." It really hadn't been much more than that for the Chippequoti aside from the fevers. Otherwise they had fared pretty well.

*************************************

"Lets get you into the bath." Killian had come to realize that giving a bath to a person suffering hallucinations was about like giving Cin a bath.

Kato groaned as Killian pulled him out of the bed. He didn't have the energy to protest, and his body was sticky from the sweat. "This payback for me taking care of you on this ship?" He grunted as they walked to the bathroom.

"Absolutely." Killian grumbled. "Because nothing turns me on more than giving a doctor a bath." A sarcastic tone had come to his voice. "Really I could care less about about whatever happened on that ship."

"Still grouchy as ever I see." Kato paused, leaning against the bathroom's door-frame as a deep wheezing cough nearly keeled him over. Killian finally got him stripped down and in the bath. As the water washed over him in blood red torrents he had to remind himself it was just his mind playing tricks on him. It wasn't blood and Anna wasn't dying, but it still felt that way.

Chuckling a little Killian pulled the man along till he had a coughing fit. Patiently he waited for it to be done before he helped Kato get undressed and into the tub. He could see that blank look on the doctor's face and he waved a hand in front of him. "Hey no losing track. I don't want you to decide to try scuba diving."

"Ridiculous. I've never been scuba diving in my life." Kato grouched. He had to close his eyes in order to concentrate on the task at hand and scrubed the cloth over his face and arms. He kept wanting to ask if Anna was alright, even though he knew she was, so he changed the name. "How's Claire and Star?" He asked wearily. He hadn't heard much about people he would normally have been looking out for during a mass sickness like this.

It was slightly amusing to talk to Kato when he was trying hard not to let on he was hallucinating. That distant look was giving him away. "Well you never know. Might try it someday." Even if it was wrong to laugh about this conversation he couldn't help smirking until Kato mentioned Claire and Star. "They're fine. Claire is with Lisa and Frank till I'm done here and Star just has a fever with the cough. Nothing serious." Sitting on the edge of the tub he watched the doctor with wary eye. He half expected the man to jump up at any point screaming for Anna. "How you feeling? Not planning any crazy naked escapades today?"

"Don't tempt me." Kato replied half seriously. He rinsed off then put a hand on the edge of the tub, eager to be out of this vulnerable position. Killian helped him out and wrapped a towel around him. Kato's head suddenly shot up and looked beyond the bathroom wide eyed, with that familiar look of a man about to bolt. Kato took a trembeling breath. "Is she screaming? Or is it me again?"

Killian nodded. "I'm not. Just trying to make sure I don't have to tackle you again." He didn't like giving Kato baths though he acted more like a babysitter. When the doctor finished Killian grabbed a towel and wiped the doctor down before he helped Kato wrap it around himself. Instinctively he placed a cautionary hand on the doctor when his head shot up. "That's you. Lets get to the bedroom and get something clean for you to wear." Still he didn't trust Kato. He had that wild look in his eyes. "Don't do it." Murmuring under his breath he pursed his lips and shook his head. If all the details played out the same Kato would pretend to settle down and then dart.

He struggled to remain calm and not sprint to the room to make sure. Kato's heart pounded and he moved as quickly as could, without running. "in my head...in my head." He murmured to himself over and over. The walk back to the bedroom took hours it felt like. When he finally got there his heart calmed as the screams faded and Anna lay safely in bed. He breathed out a breath he'd been holding, completely forgetting he was still in not but a towel. He started moving towards the bed to check on her, to touch her hand, and know that he wasn't hallucinating her resting there.

It was relieving to say the least that he wouldn't be chasing Kato through the house again. Killian let the man grab Anna's hand and then he gently pulled away. "You need clothes unless you wanna be stark naked next time Sooni comes in here."

Kato flushed at the thought and opened the closet. He pulled out a t-shirt and loose pants. This virus was draining. Even standing long enough to walk and put on clothes was tiring. He finally succeeded and sat back down on the bed. "Thank you." He said softly. He knew this situation was awkward for both of them, especially since neither of them had like the other very much...but Killian was there when it counted.

"Well we can now say I think that we're almost even for awkward exchanges." Killian helped Kato get tucked in and shook his head. "I sure as hell hope you get better. We want to know it won't be a whole colony of lunatics."

Kato chuckled weakly. Just be glad it was us humans who are going loonie and not the chips."

"Good point." Killian laughed. "Then again we wouldn't have known the difference if it was us anyway."

"I highly doubt that. The Chippequoti may be a strong war-prone race...but are far more noble than they are savage." Kato coughed heavily, then rested back in the pillow. "You can send Sooni back in."

Somehow it helped a little bit even coming from a sick man that he didn't think the Chip's were savage. Seeing them at their best helped. "Alright. You keep up the good streak. I mean..." Killian frowned. "You know what I meant. Just get better." Growling a little he stepped out and ignored the smirk from the female Chip. "I'll be back later."

*************************************************************************

A few days later Anna started into her random ravings. She turned in the bed and stared at Kato for a long moment. "You got enough to share?" Breathing heavily she started to pat him down. "C'mon you said you had snuff or something I could use."

"You don't do that anymore, remember." Kato had turned the corner in his recovery just in time for Anna to go downhill. He put an arm around her. "You're ok. You've got me."

"I'm not giving you nothin unless you pay up you sick bastard!" Pushing away from him she scowled. "The hell with you. I'm going to find somebody that knows how to treat a lady." Her brown eyes lit up and her nostrils flared slightly as she stared at him and tried to keep from coughing. Nobody liked to think that the lady they were about to deal to or sleep with was sick. She'd do anything for that next round. Had to have it.

Kato blinked. That was the first he'd heard of that. He knew about the drugs, though she'd never said...but..."Shh, You're ok, Anna. Its Kato. Your boyfriend. Try and remember."

Frowning a little she smirked. "You're funny. I don't have a boyfriend." Chuckling she leaned closer. "I do think you're kinda cute though."

Kato smiled awkwardly. "Honey, your sick. Just lay down and go back to sleep."

"Mmmm and coy." Giggling a little she snuggled closer. "You sure you don't have a fix for me?" Grabbing one of his hands she moved it to her rear end. "If you like it..."

Kato's heart pounded and he sat up, pulling his had away. "I'm not one of your john's Anna. You're the love of my life. When you wake up, you'll remember."

Suddenly her eyes got wide. She never told anyone her name was Anna. "Who are you? Did my dad send you out here to get me? I'm not going back and I never will. Had enough of that and I don't care who you are!" Pushing away from him she started to scream. "Help he tried to kill me! Help!" Scrambling out of the bed she flopped onto the floor and began to drag herself crying the whole way till the door opened. "He did something to me and I can't walk. Help me." Curling into a ball she sobbed and clung desperately to the woman till she fell asleep.

Kato could only watch heart broken from the bed as Sooni held Anna in her arms. She still had so many secrets that she'd never shared, though he'd never asked. When Sooni finally put Anna back to bed, Kato wanted to do nothing more but wrap his arms around her. Still, he was worried that he'd wake her and send her into another fit. All he could do was try and get better himself.

*****************************************************************************

The colony was a disaster. Only 2-3 weeks of majority of the folk becoming sick and the fields had almost got overgrown with weeds, supplies were low, and many Chippequoti had either come to respect their patients or despise them. It depended on the experience and individuals. For himself Killian was glad that the bear finally learned to sleep outside and it took itself fishing most days.

"Hey Star we need to do something. People here are a little on edge. You have any ideas of who we could ask to help do something?"

Star smirked at Killian's question. "Oh yes...I believe I know someone who can help." A few minutes later Star was knocking on Anna's door. It had taken a while but the majority of the people who'd gotten ill had recovered by now. She hoped Anna was among the"Oooh Sooni please help me get the door." Anna wiped a little sweat from her brow. She was down to the last of it and only sweat like a pig everyday.
Sooni opened the door. "Hello, Star." She said with a bright smile. Her voice was a bit hoarse and gravely, but she was speaking. Star gawked. "Sooni! Your voice! Oh, that's awesome." Sooni nodded and smiled then let her in to see Anna. "Anna? What are you still doing in bed, lazy bum." Star smirked, sitting on the beside her.
"Oh I'm getting up." Anna pushed her hand into her wild curls of blond hair. "Now what would bring you all this way when you've got a bear, a husband, and a baby to take care of?"
"All this way? Pfft, you're like a two minute walk away." Star chuckled. "But seriously, I need help. Everyone is still on edge after this virus thing. We need something fun. I'm thinking some sort of festival or party."
Anna chuckled a little. "Ooh a party. You did come to the right girl!" Pointing to her dresser she continued, "I need the red pants, yellow shirt and my purple scarf and then we'll get this little planning session going." Stripping her night gown off she threw the silky material aside and grabbed her bra off the corner of the head board. "Now we could use the tents if we still have them."
"We do." Star brought the clothing over.
"Good." Anna struggled into her shirt and pulled the drawer that was near the bed open so she could choose a pair of underwear to try and slip on underneath the covers. She didn't want to flash Star. "Then we need some lanterns and we'll set up some food tasting stations. Kind of like a progressive dinner and folks will vote on the best food from each tent. Winners will get a prize of some sort which we'll have to decide later on."
"That's a brilliant idea! A pair of ships will be making a supply run in the next two days. Write down what you need and I'll have it added to the list."

"Ok." Anna thought for a moment and then began writing out different meals and appetizers. "We need a menu for folks to vote on. Only two of each and then up to 5 slots for each kind. So we'll have 10 people cook different appetizers." Then she stopped and looked at Sooni. "Wouldn't be all that fair if it was only human meals so we'll have you write down some Chippequoti foods too."
Sooni smirked. "I shall win this contest." She says determinedly. "Oh you're on." Star replied. "Wait till they taste my ship food."
A little grin came to Anna's face. "It'll have to be blind. None of the guys can know which of their women made which dish. I know Sooni's cooking is good and Star it wouldn't matter what Killian thought he would always choose your food cause its you."
"Each person could put in their dish at the buffet but have it be numbered instead of named. Then people can vote or not vote for it right there at the table and it wouldn't be biased." Star recommended. "We should have build a dance floor too." Sooni suggested.
"Chippeqouti like to dance?" Anna almost had to laugh. For how stiff necked they were at times she couldn't quite see that going down. "I like the idea. Maybe I can get Kato out there. Yes...." Wiggling a little in her bed she even managed to make her legs move. "I need to get back to those exercises so I can be walking more."

"Yeah you do." Star grinned. "Ok, what else?" She thought. "Games...we need games of sorts."
"Drop a penny in a shot glass." Anna giggled. "I'm good at that and all the tall folk will see there is an advantage to being short."
Star laughed. "Ok that's one. We could do an apple bobbing for the kids, darts...there's so many options."
"Or do that game where you tie the balloon to the back of your pants and then your partner has to pop it without using their hands. So great to race with guys against girls." Anna grinned. "I could even do that game."
Star put her hands on her hips in a mock scolding. "Anna...there will be children here...lets keep it G'rated hmm?"
"The chippequoti love their wrestling matches." Sooni smirked. "There could be a prize for the person who beats everyone else."
"There aren't that many kids." Anna grinned even though she could see where Star was coming from. "Wrestling matches would have to be separated between Chippequoti and Human. Do the Chips separate based on gender too?"
"No. Most chippequoti females can match their partner in battle." Her eyes lit up. "Sometimes if a female is interested in a male, or visa-versa, they'll challenge on another in the ring. Its the one time that prowress in battle trumps the class of blood."
Anna frowned. "So you mean if you wanted that Chip and you could beat him then you'd get rights to him?" She was a little confused on the concept.
"Not exactly the rights to him, but he'd couldn't use my class as an excuse to dismiss me because I beat him. If anything he should be attracted, even if don't win but come very close."
"Hmmm..." Anna thought for a moment. "Odd. You beat up on each other and that's how you decide you're attracted." Then she frowned. "Oh now that's creepy. Star you met Killian when you tried to kill him...and look where it got you."
"You did?" Sooni asked in amazement.
"Yes...yes I did." Star nodded. "Then I got locked up for a week but I used my charm and negotiating skills to work my way onto the crew. And...viola."

Sooni shook her head. "There is only one possible problem with this. Some of the chippequoti may want to challenge Killian for leader rights."
Anna shrugged. "Well he's high class. Last name is Lolly or something like that. How likely is it they would beat him?" It might be interesting to see anyway and Anna was entirely opposed to the idea. She'd seen Killian fight and he wasn't one to go down easy.
"Laularin." Star corrected. "And no way he goes in that ring. His knee is messed up and his skull is still healing from that fracture. I don't need some puffed up Chippequoti putting his recovery back several weeks just cause they think they can do a better job than him."
Sooni's eyes were wide. "Laularian? Wait...your husband is THE Killian Laularian? The chip who came back to claim his inhertience. Defeated his brother in battle? Then sold it all for a ship!?" Sooni shook her head.
"He's that popular, huh." Star notes.
Sooni nodded. "There are many mixed feelings about him. Some are amazed, others think he's a fool." She shrugged lightly. "I did not care either way. His actions now have proved him worthy in my eyes."
"Ooh I didn't know you married such a famous guy." Anna frowned a little. "And I remember all that, just didn't know it would make infamous for all the wrong reasons. You know it doesn't matter where we go its always the response to the way he does things." What she didn't know about was Killian's knee still being a problem. "So what do we do about the wrestling? Have a doctors note saying you're in condition to fight or not?"
Star shrugged. "I don't know. I don't care. Let them think what they want, but he's not getting in there. Let's move on, shall we."
"Probably we should." Anna cleared her throat and glanced at Sooni. "It'll still be on the list for willing participants."
Sooni nodded gratefully, and the planning continued.

***************************************************************

No greater joy and excitement had Star seen in their little colony than she was seeing now. Everyone was eager and ready to contribute to this festival and dozens of men, women and chippequoti signed up for a slot at the buffet and even more signed up for slots in the wrestling tournaments. Several people had volunteered to put up booths hosting tools of their trade including art, carpentry, jewelry, homemade alcohols and more. One old man promised the best cider they'd ever tasted if they bought several crates of apples for him. Star put it on the list. The excitement only grew for the next two weeks leading up to the festival.

The excitement came to a climax the day of the festival two weeks later. Anna had been in charged of the general placement of things and it looked spectacular. Colored anti-gravity orbs hung in the air like so many stars, lanterns hung on trees for the night portion. A group of carpenters unveiled a playground they had built for the children complete with slides, swings, an obstacle course and other fun things. Booths lined a newly carved path right in the center of the houses with various activities, games, and things to look at buy or trade for. Two women were painting children's faces. Another woman was sketching couple's portraits with expertise. Old Man Tim was giving samples of his famous hard cider and people were buying it by the bottle for incredible prices. He would soon be a very rich man.

The buffet ended up being 5 tables long with enough food for 500 people. Each dish was numbered and every table held a few tablets that allowed people to vote for their top five favorite dishes. People had already begun grabbing plates to taste the long awaited food. The arena was a well padded area to the left of the eating area which everyone was calling the "Corral" because of the memories associated with the arena. Fighters were already lining up for their chance to challenge someone. Watchers and Fighters both paid 5 credits to contribute to the winner's purse. Sooni was in line as well, her eye on the the Chip she was going to challenge.

Star was dressed in one of her more fun flashier outfits, a red scarf about her neck. She held Killian's arm while he carried Claire on his chest. She'd made him carry her, hoping it would help deter any would-be challengers. "Well, what do you think?" She asked with a brilliant smile.

Anna put together mounds of cabobs for the appetizers. Once all the food was laid out in the tents the men and women who did the cooking snuck out to join the others. So far she was pretty sure that she had at least a fighting chance with the food. Sneaking was hardly an option since she still needed the wheel chair for the day if she wanted to dance with Kato. Lately it felt like he was giving her odd looks and she wondered what kinds of things she said when she hallucinated. Maybe it was something about that night and it had been a painful memory for him. At least this time he didn't try to stay away from her and perhaps she was overthinking it.

Joining Kato in the line she grinned at him. "Plenty of food. Everybody needs it after they were so sick. Get them good and fat." Playfully she poked at his belly. Not that Kato would ever be fat. His appetite had thankfully increased some since he had the transplant, but he still didn't eat as much as she thought he should.

*********************

Stepping out of the house with Star Killian winked at her. "You know the best part is you." He liked seeing her all dressed up and she had talked him into wearing his green shirt. Otherwise he was still wearing his pants, boots, and usual vest. There were certain articles of clothing that would likely not change at all in the future. A vest and his boots among those things. Adjusting Claire on his chest he looked down at her. "Getting too heavy for mom. That's why she has me carrying you." So far that as what he thought and he didn't want her to relapse and get sick again. Thankfully it wasn't too bad, he'd seen Kato when he was a lot worse off with the fevers and all the symptoms that went with it.

"Hey which meal did you make?" Killian wanted to see if he could get the answer out of Star. "I want to make sure I vote for the right food."

Star laughs. "Nope. Now I get see how well you know my cooking and if you can taste it." She winks at him. Her dish was the only noodle stir-fry with fresh vegetables and chicken. She'd made it a few times for him before, but there were over 100 different dishes spread out along the tables.

"Not fair." Killian looked over the tables. "There's too many to choose from and I can't taste them all to find out." Like everyone else he took his time wandering through trying to figure it out and he finally picked one. "Smells good." Put a little on his plate and tasted it. "Tastes good its not quite the best." Finally he decided after trying almost 50 dishes. Everyone had done almost the same thing. Walked around with little testing plates and served a bite here and there till they were full. "Ok this is the best and I'm stuffed cause I've tried it about 5 times now."

Star laughed and kissed him on the cheek. "Nice job, Killian. I knew after you went back to the stir-fry the third time you had it. That calls for a special treat tonight. While him picking out her dish had been impressive, him remembering it amidst 50 other dishes was even more amazing. It excited her too see how far he'd come in such a short time.

"Ooh does it?" Killian smirked a little. He knew which dish it was by the second time he tried it. Still it was honestly his favorite. Never once did he have food like hers before. A little frown came to his face and he looked around the party. Mike had to have slipped in somewhere and he didn't see him during the food tasting. There were several people and everyone was constantly moving about. "So now to the dessert tent. Make gluts of ourselves."

"Oh god! I can't eat anymore! Let's look at the booths first huh? Then we'll go check out the desserts."

With a groan Killian turned with Star hanging on his one arm. "I think we could do that." He was drawn by the cider and after a quick taste of it he decided they needed at least 2 bottles. "We need some of that Star." With the head injury he wasn't supposed to be drinking yet, but he liked the idea.

"Ok. We'll buy them and store them. But I'm hiding them so you can't get into them till you're ready." Star smirks. She looked over the shoulder of the artist, drawing two teens who both had a red flush in their cheeks and those cheesy first love smiles on their faces. Star chuckled at them and continued on with Killian, admiring the handy work of the carved animals, jewelry and hand woven sweaters. "We've got some really talented people in this colony." She notes. "Did you see that playground!? Think...in just two or three years, Claire could be playing there."

"Hide them?" Killian rolled his eyes. "Of course you would. My skull is just fine. It's as hard as ever." Gingerly he rested a hand on it. He was still a little wary of tapping his head because it didn't take much to start the headaches. "So uh...." Looking around the planet he nodded when she mentioned the skill. "You like it here? Better than living on a beach with blue sand and sun?"

"Mmm, I do want to visit the beach again sometime in the future...but...I like it here. Its quiet, peaceful, the air smells amazing and I really, really like that we live in a log house...even if there are alot of bugs. Its weird that we have a bear for a pet but..." She shrugged. "I guess he'll make an excellent guard dog. Or...is cinnamon a she?"

At least Star was happy with the planet. He didn't recall having any say about landing here so he was glad for whoever made the choice. It was a good one. There were a few odd comments and finally Star had to poke fun at Cin. "Cinnamon is a boy. Last I checked he had a set a balls on him." Now that he mentioned it Killian remembered that he was supposed to brush Cinnamon tomorrow. "Yeah I got to brush him out again. He insists on rolling in any and everything." The bear was already getting to be pretty good sized and it was hardly more than a cub. At least it was training fairly well. "You want to help?"

"Help? Brush a bear?" As pleased as was by him remembering that, she had no desire to get near the creature. "No thanks...I'd rather keep my hand." She was quiet for a moment as they walked. "Do you like it here? I tried to pick a place that would sustain our needs and be pleasant to live in while also hiding us."

"He won't bite if you're not afraid of him. Cin is pretty good. I've only got a few scratches the last few days. He's learning to be gentle." Killian sought out her hand and held it while they walked along to the next booth. "Yeah I like it. You did a good job picking out a nice spot."

There were loud cheers from the corral and she briefly wondered if Sooni had won her challenge yet, but she was keeping Killian as far away as possible. "Ok, I think I'm ready for some dessert now."

"Alright lets get some dessert and head over to the corral and see what's going on." Giving her hand a squeeze he started for the tent and Claire began fussing. It seemed by the way she kept trying to turn her head that she wanted to see. "Help me turn her around."

Star undid the straps of the pack and helped him flip it. "I don't think going to corral is a good idea." She says as she fastens the final buckle. "I'm worried some of the chippequoti my try and challenge you to a match but you're still recovering and I don't want you to have to be put in the awkward position of saying no and turning them down."

"Nobody is gonna challenge me." Killian rolled his eyes. "I didn't sign up to wrestle. It would be nice to watch."

"And if they do? If they challenge your leadership? Will you still ignore them?" She asked seriously.

Killian shrugged. "I'll do what I have to."

"And what's that?"

Star was getting a little pushy and he looked at her. "Depends on how they approach the situation."

She sighed. "Then forget it. If you can't give a definite..."i will not wrestle no matter how much I'm instigated" then we're not going." She put a hand on his face tenderly. "I just got you back. I need you to stay safe and healthy and not relapse or have something worse happen to you just cause you couldn't swallow your pride for a bit."

"I don't want to wrestle." Killian pulled his face away from her. "I'm not going there to wrestle. Just want to watch. Is there anything so bad with that?"

She gives him a look, still worrying, but if she tried to restrain him, it would only end badly. She nods. "Fine...we're just watching."

"That's all I want to do. After...." Turning with her he started for the tents. "After we have dessert and we can walk around outside with it before we go watch the wrestling. I'm sure there will be a few contestants left when we get there."

Star chirped in with her little phrase of, "Sounds good."

**************************************************************

Near the end of the night the crowds piled into tents to watch the two different rings. Chippequoti seemed to be the most vigorous and excited about their matches. Though there were more humans in population fewer of them per capita had signed up to participate. Still everyone came to see the fun.

Killian took his seat with Star and he held onto Claire who seemed to be enjoying herself when he turned her around her little carry pack. She clapped excitedly with all the colorful clothes in front of her and played with the woman that was constantly making faces at her. Holding a hand over Claire’s torso he could feel her try to spring off his legs with her little feet. She still wasn’t quite crawling, but hopefully that would come in time. No matter that he didn’t walk till he was almost 5 he was still pretty sure some of that was more than being Chippequoti. Some of the Chips walked at the age of 3-4. Unless his bones were actually heavier than they were supposed to be. Either he or his brother was the illegitimate son and he never learned which one of them it was.

Gradually Claire started to fall asleep and he still held onto her, but he leaned closer and closer to the game almost scooting off his seat. It was getting tense. They were about to announce the Chip winner of the wrestling matches. Even the humans had stayed to watch.

This was acceptable in his mind. There was only friendly competition and no blood. Well if there was blood it was only occasional and a little bit of a bloody nose was nothing new. They made it the whole night with Star fidgeting and not a single challenge. Of course he was going to be alright. He didn’t sign up for anything like this because he didn’t feel up to it and he knew Star wouldn’t like him to do that.

So far the champion was a formidable wrestler. His arms flexed and he pushed the last Chippequoti’s face to the ground and then slammed into the man’s back before he flipped him over and pinned his shoulders to the floor. Killian winced in sympathy for the loser and he stood up to walk out with Star. “There it wasn’t so bad.” He got to see who the winner was and he didn’t end up in any wrestling matches. The two of them got outside of the corral and he pulled Star behind the door with him to kiss her.

Claire squeaked defiantely as they squished her between the two of them and Killian chuckled nervously. “Oh...woops.” Didn’t work so well with a baby stuck to the front of him. Winking he grabbed Star’s hand anyway and they started out to mingle with the crowd of folks.

“I need to talk with you.” The champion from the wrestling match came over and peered at Killian. Beckoning to a few other Chippequoti he waited till they were present. “Meet me here tomorrow. We’re going to decide whose fit to lead this colony. I know about you, Killian Laularin. You’re still the bastard child abandoned on a planet and you aren’t fit to lead us. You don’t know our customs, native tongue, or respect our culture. If you win, we will follow you only if you learn our ways. I speak for all the Chippequoti men.”

There wasn’t much that Killian could say about that one. He couldn’t say that he’d ever been officially challenged or had any kind of demands laid on him like this before. If he won they still had expectations and they didn’t sound unreasonable except he was afraid of some of the culture. What if they made him abandon Star?

“When I win I’ll learn the Chippequoti way, but I will keep my family.”

The man smiled. “You wouldn’t have to abandon them if you knew our customs. Once you take her into your protection as a bride we cannot break that oath.” Slapping Killian on the shoulder he grunted. “I’ll see you at the ring tomorrow by sunrise. If you’re not here I’ll consider your leadership forfeit.”

Killian waited till the group of Chippequoti left and then he glanced at Star. He felt somewhat badly, but there wasn’t a whole lot he could have done about it. “Obviously they were waiting to find out who among them was the most able to lead.” Swallowing he tried to avoid her glances. “There was nothing I could do. He was going to challenge me here or later.” In Killian’s eyes this was an inevitable evil that had befallen him and that was all there was to it. Perhaps Star felt differently.

****************************************************

That night he felt restless and worried. It seemed that neither of them were in the mood. Killian woke up off and on till he could see just a hint of light starting to peek through the shades in the room.

Rolling out of bed he wandered to the kitchen and took a little sip of water and wet his fingers under the faucet. Killian rubbed his face and shuffled back to the room to get dressed. “I’m heading out.” He barely had to say the words and Star was already shooting off the bed. Grabbing her by the shoulders he stared into her eyes. “I’ll be just fine.” Even if his stomach was churning and he already had a headache he was determined not to give her any more reason to worry about him. At least this time there wasn’t any knives involved.

By the time he arrived at the corral there was the entire Chippequoti population piling in to see the wrestling match and the few drunks from last night that didn’t get home.

Stepping into the center of the floor he listened to the rules and took his shirt off the same as the other Chip. The two of them stared at each other for a few moments and Killian figured he would let the other attack him first.

Their style of wrestling was more like a brawl. Anything was acceptable short of punching someone with a closed fist. Killian side stepped the first lunge only to get hit sharply in the back with the side of the Chippequoti’s hand. Ducking and weaving he pivoted on his good leg to find himself being thrown to the floor at an angle.

Killian rolled to his side and twisted his leg around the man’s then pulled against it the wrong way till he was loosed and got his feet. All the games were coming to his mind and that instinct to survive and emerged. This man was fighting him and he had to win. Killian fought to keep the rules in mind as each time a chance to kill the opponent presented itself.

At times he had to restrain himself and it showed because he often took a hit where he shouldn’t have. Finally on top of the man he pinned his shoulders and then a sharp hit to his liver from the man’s knee doubled him over. Killian lost his grip long enough to lose the upper hand and then the man slammed into his back. Falling to the floor he groaned and tried to move. The man grabbed one arm and started to twist it. “Augh!” Killian winced and turned with his arm till he managed to get a leg free. Forcing his leg between himself and his opponent he pushed against him. The Chip released his arm and instead twisted his leg. At this point both men were yelling and screaming while Killian fought to get his leg out of the man’s grip and in turn he threw his entire body’s weight against the other. The two of them toppled with Killian on top and he pressed the man’s shoulders to the floor. All the while he winced as the man pushed against his head and then pulled him into a headlock. Still Killian could breath so as long as he could hold it.

It felt like forever before the man admitted defeat and Killian pulled himself off the mat and then offered his hand to the other.

“You are young to lead us. Barely more than child, but you’ve proven yourself. Tomorrow you will start to learn our ways.”

Kilian nodded and he began limping for the spot where Star was sitting. His head hurt, shoulder hurt, leg hurt, back hurt...there wasn’t much that didn’t hurt at this point and from the looks of it his challenger felt about the same. Glancing up at her he looked away again. “I’m sorry. I know you didn’t want this.”

"Plenty of food. Everybody needs it after they were so sick. Get them good and fat."
"Being overweight is not good for your health." Kato replied in his typical fashion. As usual he avoided the majority of sweet, fatty and oily looking foods, going for the ones with healthy protein and fresh vegetables. He'd been extremely conscientious about both their health in general after that virus. That had been very unpleasant and he had no desire for a repeat experience. "There are some delicious foods here though. Are the cabobs yours? You did an excellent job." He says taking a bite out of one.
Anna smirked when he complimented the cabobs. "Ooh if I told you it might ruin the fun of guessing." Taking one she bit off a chunk of meat and then the vegetable. "It might be mine." She knew that if he was the one pushing her along in the wheelchair she would have to watch what she ate. However, it didn't stop her from sneaking some of those 'unhealthy' foods when he wasn't looking. Stuffing a big bite of deep fat fried food into her mouth her eyes watered slightly as he turned toward her. "Mmhmmm." That was all she could manage to say with her mouth full at this point.
He smirked at her chipmunk like cheeks. "Just don't choke, alright?" He shook his head. She thought she was clever but he noticed alot more than she realized. He'd become especially attentive ever since deciding he wanted to continue with their relationship. It was almost as if a part of him hoped to find something she hadn't shared with him...and unfortunetly....he had...though he wasn't sure how to go about talking about it. Perhaps it was best left in the past...but...if was going to marry her. He sighed lightly. He still didn't know what to do. After they had ate their fill he took her down the booths. "Anyone in particular you want to stop at?"
Chewing the food and swallowing it quickly she prepared to take a large bite of vegetables from her plate as if that was what she had stuffed her mouth with. "Oh I think I would like to see the dessert then maybe get some punch with the alcohol in it and then we could go down to the river and fish."
"The river? While there is a festival up here?" He questioned.
"Well we would make our rounds before we go sit out there." Anna glanced up at him a little surprised that he didn't seem to be as on board with her idea as she thought he would be. "I thought you'd like to get away from the scene for a few and sit in the cool grass and watch the lights from the river while we wait for our hooks to catch a few fish. Prime time to fish cause they will be close to the surface. They like the lights you know."
"Sure. If that's what you would like." He smiles down at her lightly. They continue along the booths. They both tasted the cider with Kato actually found really good. He didn't normally like alcohol but he liked that. He purchased a bottle and stored it in the back hanging off the back of Anna's wheelchair. An hour later they'd seen about everything that was left of the festival aside from the dance floor, which he purposefully avoided for her sake.

"You ready to go to the river?" He asked looking down at her. "I can park you here and get the fishing rods.
"I said we would make our rounds." Anna stood up out of the chair. She was a little shaky, but she was determined. "Lets go have one dance."
Kato hurried to support her. "Are...are you sure?"
"Yes..." Reaching out she grabbed his hands and wobbled toward him. "Sooni has been helping me practice walk while you work. Saved up all my strength just for you tonight." Taking one of his hands she wrapped it around her waist and leaned against him. "Just hold me there while we walk ok?" Once they got to the dance floor she cautiously stepped in front of him and set her hand on his shoulder and allowed him to raise her other hand slightly for the dance pose. With one of his hands on her back and her one hand resting against him she could somewhat dance.
Kato moved with slow gentle movements, watching her face closely for any sign of pain, but only seeing that adorable flirty smile. He chuckled lightly at her. "You're just so beautiful."
Anna searched his face for any kind of emotion during the first few moments of the dance. He was so worried about her all the time and she didn't know why most of the time. Then he finally spoke. "Thank you. I tried to be fetching looking for my man."
Kato smiled and nodded, "Well you certainly are." He adjusted his hold on her to help give her optimal support. "You're a beautiful woman, Anna. My beautiful woman. I know sometimes I'm stiff and dull and have a stick up my butt..." He chuckled with her, "But...my life hasn't been same since you've been in it...in a good way." As the song faded he found himself dropping to a knee and taking her hands. It was so impromtu, but it felt right. "I know I don't have a ring right now...but I'm done waiting and hesitating. You're the only woman I'll ever love the rest of our lives. The only person I want to grow old with. The only one I have any interest in exploring life with. Andy Anna...will you marry me?"
Blushing slightly she looked over at his hand holding hers before she looked at his face again. "You do know I say that just to tease you." Still she laughed a little. Anna didn't want the song to end and yet she knew she couldn't last with all the hip swaying of dancing for another song. Her eyes got wide and she almost teared up as he dropped to one knee. Still using one of his shoulders as balance she leaned a bit closer and very carefully got onto her knees with him. "Yes...I would take you with or without a ring. Yes yes..." Kissing him emphatically she stared into his eyes. "Keep being the man you are now and I'll always be your woman."
He wrapped his arms around her, holding her tenderly as people around them clapped and cheered. Kato stood and scooped her up in his arms. "We need to make one more stop before the lake." He rolled her wheelchair in front of the jewelers booth. Most of things here were simple, but still pretty. "Choose any one you want." He said, pointed to the rings.
Anna buried her face into his shoulder when he picked her up. She always felt tiny and protected when he picked her up. Taking a moment to wrap her arms around his neck she also wiped her eyes before he sat her down and it was all for nothing when they got to the jewelers. No matter that it was simple jewelry she still got misty eyed and picked the gold ring with garnet. It was hardly more than a gold band with a single red stone in it. "I like that one." Reaching up she grabbed his spare hand and pulled it to her lips so she could kiss his hand. Anna waited till they were away from the others and she stared up at Kato. "I don't deserve you. You're too nice of a man to end up with a girl like me and I can't help thinking somehow you got jipped especially after I got shot."
Kato stopped pushing her down the path and knelt in front of her wheelchair. "I chose you, Anna because I love you and make my heart come alive. I am alive around you..without you I am a simple doctor in a world of black and white. You brought color to my life. I don't want to be without you. Who you were before does not matter to me. Who you are now...and the woman you will become...that's who I love."

Once they were seated at the lake she put her line into the water and laid back on the grass. "I always figured you knew I did drugs at one point in my life. All those little marks on my arms from shooting up. Most of the scars faded with creams...." Letting out a long breath she turned onto her stomach and played with the ring on her finger. "Grew up a normal life for a rich kid. Only daughter and child of Lord Travoy. Yes...The Lord Travoy who owns 4 mining planets and has billions of credits to his name. Got to be about 19 and I got hooked to drugs, ran off and did everything else that drug addicts do. Eventually I got off the drugs cause I was running from private investigators he sent to find me. I got stuck on a cargo ship for a few weeks and that's how I got off the drugs. Had all my withdrawals in the nasty little hole full of puke and whatever else. Mainly working men there and I figured out the hard way that I'd better turn into a man if I didn't want to get used. So I worked there for a few years till the war started and you know the rest. Now I'm here and I'm still ashamed of what I did and I'm not the woman my dad thought or you thought. I still love you and I want to stay here." Searching his face she tried to see if there was any kind of indication that he loved her less for what she'd told him.
Kato smiled more brightly at her, and squeezed her hand. "Thankyou for telling me, for letting me in to a painful part of your history. It just makes me love you more."
He shrugged. "Don't think so...I've never been very good at fishing."
Anna giggled. "Well you caught me. I'm a pretty good sized fish." Getting serious again she peered into his face. "You know I was always afraid of going back because I loved my dad and I didn't want to hurt him. Then I was afraid to tell anyone who I was, could be a lot of money in me if the wrong person knew. That's part of what I love so much about you. Its not the money that you fell in love with. That was the other reason I didn't go back even after I got cleaned up. Sent him a letter from a planet a few years back and said I was alive and fine. I wanted to meet someone that loved only me and accepted my past for what it was without the money grubbing heart."
He sat up on an elbow. "Are you telling me you're even richer than you are now?" He asked incredulously.
"I'm his only child and I'm filthy rich if I ever decide to claim my inheritance." Giggling a little she pushed up on her elbow. "Living like this is the real thing though."

"Yeah. It is. It's simple. I love it." He stuck the pole in the ground and rolled over till he was partially on top her without pressing on her back. He kiss her and stroked her hair. "If you want to make this place our permanent home, then we should head back to the mansion grab our things, sell the house and anything we don't need and come back."
Anna shook her head slightly. "We can't go back." Running had become so much a part of her life that she almost had a sixth sense of when it was dangerous. "When we left that night it was the last we were going to see of that house. I've got the money and income from the mines in a blind account and I can set up for a realtor to sell the mansion fully furnished. Anything else we'll have an estate sale for and they take it to the bank that will put it into my account."
"I see." He looked a little disappointed, but smiled at her anyway. "Then we'll just settle in here. When you're walking again fully I'll take you shopping. We can get things to make our house feel more like a real home."
That look of disappointment came to his face and she felt a little guilty. "I'm sorry. Its too dangerous. Rumor has it I'm still alive, the lady, but I took ill and had to travel abroad for a healthier climate." Smiling a little she nodded to his comment about the things for the new house. "If there was something of special value there I have a few people that could break in and get it out. Just prefer not to use them unless its important."
"Its nothing that can't be replaced." Kato replied. He looked at her line which was jerking like crazy. "Uh, I think you caught one."
Anna sat up and looked at her line. "Oooh so I did." Reeling it in she watched the fish flop the whole up to her feet and then she leaned over and grabbed it by the tail. Spotting a nearby rock she bashed the fish's head and then smiled at Kato. "So if I catch it do you gut it?"
"Not out here. We should do it in a sink were we can clean it and...." Kato's eyes went wide and he dropped a hand over Anna's mouth, pressing her and himself as close to the ground as possible. There was a loud grunt right above them. Cin trotted down the bank, sniffing around them. Kato lay as still as possible as the bear found it's way to the fish Anna had just caught, snatching it up in its mouth before waddling down to the water. "Ok...lets get up slowly and leave before we upset it." Kato whispered, moving his hand from Anna's mouth.
"Wha..." Anna's voice was cut off by his hand and she looked up just in time to see the bear come lumbering down the hill. That darn pet and it took her fish. It was still only a cub, but she had a healthy fear of bears and agreed with Kato. Squirming up the hill with a little help the two of them reached the top of the hill while the bear seemed to enjoy itself for an evening fishing trip. On the way to their house she giggled. "I knew you didn't want to gut that fish."

Kato laughed the nervousness off as well. "Yeah, I didn't want to gut it so much I called a bear to my rescue." He snorts and pushes her inside the house. "Well, that was a very fun evening. Do you need anything before bed?"
A mischievous grin came to Anna's face. "Mmmhmmm I have a need." Getting herself from the wheelchair to perching on the edge of the bed she grabbed Kato's belt. "I need you and some other things tonight."
"You know, I'm amazed that you're not pregnant yet...between both our needs." Kato smirks, leaning over her.
"Its a concern." Anna giggled nervously. "And I've got my fingers crossed."
"Crossed for babies or against?" He asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Both. I want a baby with you and I'm scared." Anna scooted further back on the bed to lure him a bit closer. "Do you want a baby with me?"
He sat down next to her. "Yes. I do. But...what are you frightened about? The chip blood thing?"
"That and a few other things." She wrinkled her nose. "Used to make sure it couldn't happen cause of the spy thing. That's not a concern anymore. I just don't want to have a deformed baby cause of all the drugs from the past and..." Sighing she looked at him. "I'm afraid I wouldn't make a very good mom."
"You...will make an amazing mom. Perhaps a little crude..." He smirked, putting a hand on her belly. "But an amazing mom none-the-less. As for your past hurting the baby we can always run some blood tests to check. Typically though if you've been off drugs for several years, your body begins healing and repairing. Especially with modern medicine."
Hearing the word crude wasn't really what she wanted to hear. "I really got to work on that crude thing don't I?" Pulling Kato a bit closer she kissed him. "I've been off the drugs for a very long time. Over ten years. Nothing to be scared about right?"
"Probably." He kissed her back. "We can run a test in the morning...but...for now..." Kato chuckled, "We have more important matters to attend to."

Star glared at Killian as the fighter walked off. Killian hadn't even tried to get out of the fight. After everything she'd just said to him. No doubt he going with the "logical reasoning" of defending his leadership position. If what the chippequoti said was true, and all the chips really were wanting Killian's leadership challenged she could kind of understand. But to her, his well-being and safety was far more important than his position as a leader in the colony. Apparently...it was the opposite for him.

Star slept about as much as Killian did. She was probably far more stressed out than him. He wasn't the one who would have to care for a mentally disabled person if this went south. She was drifting on the edge of sleep when Killian said those dreaded words. “I’m heading out.” He barely had to say the words and Star was already shooting off the bed. Grabbing her by the shoulders he stared into her eyes. “I’ll be just fine.”
"You don't know that! You're not even fully recovered yet! One firm strike to the head and you could end up in a coma or worse!" He continued to try reassuring her, eventually having to leave to get to the corral on time. She stomped her foot nearly screaming at him in frustration as he walked out the door. She dropped onto the bed, head in her hands...terrified of what was going to happen...of what he was willingly walking into.

The cheers from the corral started and despite being terrified of what she was going to see, she couldn't help but go and watch. She dropped Claire off with Lisa and hurried to the corral, taking a seat in the stands. Some of the chippequoti around her gave her odd looks but didn't bother her. They were far more interested in the battle with Killian. With every hit he took, she felt sick. Every cry of pain made her want to jump over the fence and into the match. She nearly did at one point as Killian was trapped in a headlock. Every moment dragged as her heart pounded painfully.

Finally it was over, and Killian stood, shaking hands with his opponent and saying a few words. He walked out of the corral limping badly and looked up at her. “I’m sorry. I know you didn’t want this.”
"Its too late for sorry." She stood from her seat and left. He could find his own damn way to the doctor.
*****************************************************************************
Star sat across from Anna, a cup of tea in her hand and head resting on a fist. She fingered the cup silently, lost in thought. She was so angry...and yet she understood exactly why he'd felt it necessary. She wanted to scream at him, and yet she knew what arguments he'd use and it would accomplish nothing...so there was no point. "Thanks for letting me chill here for a bit." She finally says after a long moment of quiet after she had relayed what had happened to her. "I just...need to not be around him at the moment."

Killian winced with every step he took. It didn't take Star long to brush past him and he figured that it meant they were not going to have a happy day or two. Perhaps longer. He didn't quite make it halfway to the clinic and he had to stop to rest for a few minutes. A Chip stopped and offered to help him walk the rest of the way which at this point Killian was willing for almost anyone to help. Inside the clinic he waited his turn like everyone else to see a doctor.

Unfortunately his doctor turned out to be Kato. It had to be so ironic that he would be the one to see him after he got his head bumped a few times, leg twisted, shoulder bruised if not strained and his back hurt in a way he wasn't sure how to describe. "Oh hey....I guess it was bound to be you."

Kato looked him up and down. "Seriously, Killian? What did you do this time? Wrestle a bear?" Kato guestured for Killian to follow him and lay on the scanner table. "Speaking of which you owe my fiance a fish. Damn thing stole it from right beside us."

"No it was worse than wrestling a bear." Groaning a little he limped over to the table and laid down. Even that much had him wanting to close his eyes so he wouldn't puke if anything moved. His entire head was feeling like it might explode with a massive headache. "Oh...Yeah I'll catch a fish sometime. Just remind me."

"You aren't kidding." Kato says stunned as he looked over the results of the scan. "Your brain is showing signs of trauma. I'll need to do a procedure right away to reduce the pressure and swelling. Else short term memory loss will be the least of your concerns. How'd you manage to get in a fight anyway. I can tell by the way your leg is twisted and the size of the bruise on your shoulder that it was someone at least as large as you." Kato shook his head. "Didn't wittick warn you about protecting your skull while its cracked like this?"

Killian almost gagged when Kato said his brain was showing signs of trauma. "Oh shit..." Almost instantly his heart rate rose and he shifted nervously on the table. "I was uh...Challenged." By now it was sounding a bit pathetic and he started to breath a little faster. "Yeah he probably did and...hell Star is gonna find out anyway. She's gonna kill me."

"He challenged you? And you took the challenge at the risk of your own life?" Kato scoffed. "Sometimes you're damn selfish, Killian." He tossed Killian a medical gown. "Change. I'll be back in a few minutes with Shanti and we'll deal with the swelling,. We caught it early so it shouldn't take long, especially with the way Chippequoti seem to naturally expel excess fluid. But I'll want you on bed rest for a several days after...and definitely no more fighting!"

"I really didn't think it would get me back here." Killian wasn't sure how that logic played out. Obviously it didn't go well for him. Gingerly sitting up he started to strip his clothing off and got himself changed into the medical gown. "Selfish my ass. If you knew what was going on you..." Pausing for a moment he rolled his eyes. "He would still think the same thing." That small rolling of the eyes was instantly regretted and Killian laid down again. His head hurt so bad. When Kato came back in with Shanti he grimaced. "So how long do I have to stay here for?"

"A couple days. After which you can go home and remain in bed for at least 7 more days after that. You need to give your body time to heal." Kato put the I.v. in his arm and pulled up his mask. "See you in a few hours."

This was one time that Killian wasn't ready for the surgery and he was actually scared. He'd never encountered this kind of injury before and repeating it was worse the second time. Without a word he just watched the mask come for his face and decided to close his eyes. Even though his eyes were closed he could hear all the talking and surgery prep for just a few minutes and then they must have added the anesthesia and it all went silent too.

Anna took a deep breath. "Sounded pretty serious. Can't say that I wouldn't be mad if it was Kato. I get worried about him being a doctor."

"Yeah, but usually being a doctor isn't life threatening." She sighed and took a sip of tea. "The worst part is...I am so angry that he would enter into that fight even after I begged him not to....but I understand exactly why he did it. And where I not his wife, I would totally agree." She shook her head.

"I know that's why I agree with you as being his wife and I agree with him in part." Anna shrugged. "What if they took over and we know that they are a little aggressive about hierarchy. Still doesn't make you feel better that he about got his dumb head mashed." Part way through Anna slowed as she realized it really didn't help. "Really, I do feel for you. I wasn't comparing the threat of Kato's position to that at all. I was trying to be sympathetic by saying that I can't imagine your stress cause I get stressed over Kato's work."

"Yeah, I know." Star rubbed her eyes and looked down at her watch, only to remember she'd taken it off and put it in her pocket. All during the fight it had buzzed, warning her of Killian's condition. She hadn't been able to stand it anymore and took it off. She finished the tea and stood. "Thanks for the drink and for being a listening ear. I, uh...need to go check on Claire."

"Ok, just remember you can drop by anytime. All I do is sit here and practice walking around my table." Anna called out the door after her friend.

*********************************************

Killian woke up and he could have swore he smelled that stuff on his chest again and his head hurt way worse than it did before. He was in the recovery ward for nearly an hour just to make sure there wasn't anything immediately wrong with his breathing or head before they put him in a room. The time in the recovery ward was spent with Shanti shooting him up with serious pain killers and the whole room seemed to bounce and spin around him. Closing his eyes he woke again when the bed started to roll through the halls. Moaning a little he turned his head and that only made it worse. "No...She's gonna find out."

When his bed turned a corner and they parked his bed he could hear that familiar voice and while he was glad that he was alive he was not glad to know that she had predicted him being hospitalized again.

Star picked up Claire from Lisa's then went home. Killian still wasn't there and that worried her a bit. What if he'd passed out somewhere. Just as she was about to call him, when Kato called her instead. "Kato?"
"Hello, Star. Can you come to the ship? Its about Killian..."
She nearly dropped Claire in a moment of panic until he added. "He's alright. Its not urgent."
"I'm on my way." Star rushed over to the ship and Kato met her at the door. "What's going on? Killian...did he...his brain...?" She asked fearfully. Kato walked her to the computer. "Yes..I'm afraid there was a bit more trauma to his brain during his fight early this morning. It caused some swelling but Shanti and I were able to get it down and stop the bleeding. However, because of the trauma I want him on complete bed rest for at least two weeks minimum then limited activity after that. He'll spend the first seven days here and if he's doing better we'll let him return home." Kato sat across from Star. "I know you've experienced brain trauma yourself, though on much more severe scale. His, thankfully, is relatively minor in comparison to what it could be but I do want to keep his interactions to a minium, give his brain the time it needs to heal. I'll almost be using a treatment one of the chippequoti doctor's recommend that help repair cracked and damaged bones. Aside from that the only thing you need to know is to make sure he maintains bedrest at all times for the next two weeks. Keep the flow of blood to his brain at a minimum."
Star sighed heavily, and Claire pulled on her curls. "So he'll have a cathater? Again? And be completely useless for two weeks or more...again?" She'd told him...she'd warned him. But he'd refused to listen.
"I'm afraid so. I'm sorry, Star." Kato says sympathetically.
"Don't be...you're not the one who needs to be sorry." Star stood. "Can I see him?"
"Yeah, right this way.
***
Star sat in a chair next to Killian's bed as she waited for him to wake up. She was so upset with him, she barely remaining calm herself. But she had too...because now he was on the verge of serious brain trauma and riling him would just make things worse. He groaned and shifted his head, and Star put a hand on his arm. "Try not to move your head." She warns him...not that he listened to her warnings anyway.
Almost as soon as she said not to turn his head she put her hand on his arm and Killian wanted to look at her, but that would require moving his head. "Ok." Mumbling the word he tried to look at her out of the corner of his eye and that hurt too. "You were right. I was just so worried they would do the hierarchy thing here."
She was taken aback by the statement and shifted so he could see her without having to crane his eyes or move his head. "So what if they did. That's their choice. I don't see how you being the leader would stop that anyway except for maybe giving the other chips a choice about it....but..." She sighed and stroked Claire's hair as the girl smacked her little hand against her chin. "Well, what's done is done. Now we have to suffer the consequences of it."
"Nooo..." Killian moaned the word. "I don't care what they do within themselves. I was worried about the humans here." Shifting in the bed he winced. His back still hurt and he thought it felt like he had some sort of brace on his leg. "Didn't want them to turn humans into slaves." Finally he shifted his head cause it hurt too much to lay like he was. "Sorry. Never thought I would end up here again."
"That's why you listen to you wife." Star took a breath. "I'm pissed, Killian. But...I get why you did it. I'm glad you didn't sustain injuries that were more serious." Claire began to fuss and she knew it was time to lay her down for a nap, but she didn't want to leave him alone.
There wasn't a whole lot he could say to her. Given the same chance he probably would have made the same mistakes for the same reasons. Groaning he looked over at her. "You'll be the big boss at the house for a while. I stay here a few days and I have to stay in bed for 7 or more when I get home." Wincing again he tried to get comfortable, but it was impossible. "Just put her on my chest. She can't hurt me there."
"Maybe tomorrow. Right now you need to rest. I"ll check on you before bed." She kissed her hand and pressed it softly against his lips before turning towards the door.

"Mmmkay." Taking a deep breath he frowned a little and waved when she stepped out the door. Closing his eyes he tried to get comfortable when he heard Kato step into the room again. "She's really mad." Still he kept his eyes closed for the time.
"Of course she is. The love of her life is back in the hospital and she's stuck taking care of Claire and the house and other such matters all by herself ...again." Kato responds checking his I.V. "You don't remember even a fraction of what she had to do to keep you safe and well after the initial crack in your skull, not to mention leading an entire colony by herself with a baby and trying to make sure everyone stayed calm and organized while we settled here. I hope you begged her forgiveness and promised to make up for it."
Killian groaned. "No because I didn't think of that with a cracked skull. All I could say was I'm sorry and tell her all my reasons for doing it." Barely opening his eyes he wanted to cry. "Damn it Kato. Where is Mike? I need to talk to him. He always gives me good ideas of how to get through this shit."
Kato blinked at him. "Killian...Mike...he sustained severe injuries during your crash. He died a week later. Timo sacrificed his life as well making sure his crew got out safely. I'm sorry...I thought you knew."
"Uh noo." Killian closed his eyes again and he waited a long time till he said anything. "The kid...damn it." Taking a deep breath he tried to let it all process, but it wasn't quite making it. "No no. Mike and I were making evacuation plans for the crew before we crashed. He was in a safe spot. What the hell happened? Wasn't supposed to be anyplace dangerous. I told him to move."
Kato blinked again. "Killian? What evacuation? What safe spot?" His memories seemed to be scrambling. Poor Star. As if she didn't have enough to deal with. "You know what...never mind. Just...try and get some rest." He added a light sedative to Killian's i.v. The last thing he wanted was for Killian to start have flashbacks that felt real and get the need to move and get out of bed.
He knew exactly what Kato was doing when he came over with a small syringe to add to the I.V. "I don't want it." Growling he tried to tell Kato he didn't want the sedative. "Did I go see...him?" Killian could only hope at this point that Kato knew what he meant. He wanted desperately to have gone and seen the old man before he died. "He was my best friend." As the sedative started to take place a rather blank look started to come across Killian's face. He wanted to have emotions and his head was full of them, but they couldn't come out with the sedative.
"Yeah, Killian. You did. Star took you. Right now, just rest. Get better...for her."
"I always get better." Killian flopped a hand at Kato since he didn't have any more energy than that. "Just go away." He wanted to be alone even if he lost any tone to his voice and it all sounded good natured.

Killian didn't know what to say for days on end. He was sorry for what happened to himself, though he still couldn't say that he was sorry for his reasons. Mostly he couldn't stop thinking about Mike and Timo. Mike had been on his crew and stuck with him through the worst of it for over 10 years even if the guy did have a contingency plan at one point. Seemed that they had barely got through that and were back to planning their usual mischief before they were racing back to make the attack on the 70 ships. Somehow Mike has always made it through and he counted on that.

The old man was there anytime that he needed him. They were planning a night at the pubs on a planet after the battle. Mike was probably gonna go find a whore, but Killian never blamed him for that. He used to do the same. In fact Mike introduced him to his favorite prostitute. For a while he even thought about asking her to be his girl. Instead he got Star and she was a far better woman. If he had real trouble he could count on Mike, even if it was lady problems the old guy could give some good advice. Laying in bed was the only thing he wanted to do. Killian had no ambition to get up or move for anything. Life felt a little more lonely without the old man. His death explained why the old man hadn't come to scold him about keeping a bear, or maybe help him come up with some ideas for how to train it. There was never any telling what the man would approve of unless it came to women. While it should have been a comforting thought to know that he had at least noticed those things it still didn't make him feel any better.

10 years was so much time to think about and Killian kept digging through the archives in his brain. Countless times he remembered being run out of the engine room being called a clown and threatened with Mike's resignation if he didn't get his hands off the machine. It only took about 2 years of that for him to catch onto the fact that Mike wasn't appreciative of help unless he asked for it. They were a crew of curmudgeons and they were perfectly happy that way.

A ways down the line Timo was introduced to the crew. Always in a hurry to grow up and be a man and terribly under-prepared. Poor kid should never have gone into the smuggling business and Killian encouraged him to. Probably didn't help that it was the only thing that Killian was good at. Still it became evident earlier in Timo's life that he wasn't cut out for it. Circumstance put the kid in that realm of life and he couldn't seem to get out of it. Same as most folk that got caught in their little circles of nothing. Now he got killed cause of it and Killian felt to be part to blame. He should have stuck to his guns and refused to let the kid on the ship. Timo had been a good enough thief he could have gotten away with it and maybe got rich in time.

In the middle of one of his silent spells he heard the nurse say something about him being unresponsive and he tilted his head toward the woman. "It could be I don't have anything to say." Turning his face away from them both he closed his eyes and just went back to his own world for now. Wasn't anything he could do for now anyway.

Of course the nurse wanted to say an awful lot to him now that he was talking or had been. "I need to do an assessment and you need to cooperate. When I pull on your feet you pull back." The motor function test still annoyed him to almost no end, but he did it anyway. After what felt like forever the woman finally finished. Before she could finish changing the I.V. bag he muttered. "How long till I get out of here."

"About 3 more days."

"What!" Killian's eyes flew open and he glared at her. It was almost satisfying to see her jump like that. "I thought I was only here 2 days and bed rest was about 7-10 days at home. What the hell happened? I feel just fine."

The nurse jumped at first when he yelled and then she just watched him yell and throw his tantrum from his place in the bed. "Nope that's not what the doctor said." Reaching into the cabinet she grabbed a sedative. "You need to calm down. Its not good for your blood pressure or your head. Right now I need to make sure both stay moderate."

"I don't need a sedative." Howling at the woman he started to pick at the I.V.'s in his arm. "I'm done with this shit..."

Sighing the woman added a large dose of sedative to his I.V. and watched him fumble around until he was more calm. "Now I'm going to use these restraints and I need you to hold still." Since restraining his arms completely would cause more stress she just used arm boards that prevented him bending his arms at the elbow and it covered the I.V. so he couldn't try taking it out again.

When Star came in that afternoon the nurse met her gaze. "Well he's responding today. Started out snarky and ended a bit volatile. He's in arm boards for a while and he's on sedatives so you'll probably see a more calm version."

******************************************************************

It was time to go home and Killian couldn't wait to get out of the hospital. The nurse and he terrorized each other to no end. He had more than enough time to process the information that Mike was dead and Timo grew up too fast and sacrificed himself. "My week is up. I want to go home." Killian at least could remember that much and he wasn't about to let Kato forget it.

To hasten the process he tried to be nice to the nurse the last 2 days. That should count as improvement if nothing else. "So do I get to go home now?" As hard as it was to remain laying in the bed he did even though he was wanting an answer.

*****************************************************************************

At long last Killian got to go home. The scenery didn't seem to change much. He could see the ceiling wasn't like the ship and Claire sometimes played on the bed next to him. That was his version of watching the baby. If something happened he could tell Star. Otherwise he was just there to entertain Claire. Occasionally he would sit up if Star wasn't in the room and then his watch would show his vitals start to change so he would lay down again. Otherwise he wasn't allowed any kind of activity.

Killian shifted on the bed a little. While his back felt better after a week his leg didn't and he did get a new brace for it. Claire was babbling happily along in her crib and he started to fall asleep again. Most days at home felt like this. Then the scene unfolded with Star holding Claire in her arms running in the games. They made it over the wall and now they were in the center. He tried to save them. Still no matter what he did only 1 would survive. Claire wouldn't survive one night in the cages and it would be far worse than if he made it quick and easy for her. Rationalizing something like this felt wrong and yet it made sense, it was logical. Then there was Star and she would die painfully if he didn't do it quickly, or they could just stand together and be shot down. There was still no gauruntee that it would kill on the first shot. He could make it nearly painless...Then Claire started to whimper and he took her from Star's arms.

Bolting upright in his bed Killian took a few deep breaths and laid himself back down in the bed again. His watch was sending off all kinds of alarms and Claire was actually crying in her crib. Covering his face with his hands he groaned when Star walked in. "I'm fine she just startled me is all."

*****************************************************************************

Anna spent a little more time walking away from her table now that she could keep her balance by herself longer. Her back seemed to always have spasms and it was sore. She figured it had something to do with gaining some muscle tone back there again. Taking a seat on the sofa a waft came up to her nose and she frowned. "Oh my gosh that stinks." Whatever that spray was he put on the sofa last night didn't fix the smell.

Still she figured she might as well take a nap or at least rest her legs before she tried to cook dinner. Anna wanted to be a good fiancee and she felt bad having Kato wear himself out every day trying to take care of her and his patients. So tonight she was going to make dinner. Pulling the blanket from the corner of the sofa she shook it out to lay over herself and she wrinkled her nose. "Oh my gosh! This stinks too. We really need to do laundry." When they were sick she imagined that nearly as much laundry had gotten done.

Before she knew it Kato was home and Anna sat up. "I feel so bad. I was gonna make dinner for you tonight and I must have walked around too much cause I was just so tired this afternoon." Wincing a little she got to her feet and shuffled over to where he was to give him a hug. Before she could get there she sniffed a few times. "Oh Kato you stink. You need to take a shower and I'll make dinner while you do that ok?" Giving him a swat she giggled a little and began to cook dinner. It just smelled so strong while she was making it. For a meal that she liked it wasn't such a bad thing.

With a little time left before bed she did the dishes and then went to snuggle with Kato on the couch. Only a few minutes after she sat down she belched loudly. "Ugh...excuse me." Gradually it turned to gassing and she turned her head cause she was the one that couldn't get away from it even if he was on the other side of the room now. "This is awful I love that meal and I think the onion must have been bad or it didn't agree with me. I'm soo bloated from it." Poking at her stomach that was still nearly flat she burped again and the ominous sound of air moving in her guts sounded. "Might as well go to bed early and see if that'll help settle my guts." Anna got nestled into the bed and it was warm and comfy. Kato resting one of his hands over her stomach was nice cause it was like having a heat pack there. Sniffing again she groaned. "Even the sheets stink and I just washed them yesterday." Giving a little sniff she almost touched her nose to Kato's arm and Anna narrowed her eyes. "Did you really shower cause you still stink."

Then only a few moments later it was feeling hot and she pushed Kato away. "Ok you're getting too hot. I'm roasting to death." Despite the fact that they had gone to bed early Anna didn't want to get up in the morning. "I want to sleep." Giggling a little she pushed his hands away and then sat up. "Fine I know, its our day off and its late already." They had something planned and she couldn't quite remember what it was. "I'm gonna take a shower before we go."

In the shower Anna yelled out the door. "Kato I think the soap soured or something. It stinks. I'll just get a new bar." Scampering across the bathroom floor dripping water the whole way she reached into the closet and grabbed the bar of soap. Behind it she saw a little pregnancy test kit and rolled her eyes. She wasn't that blonde. Anna would know when she was pregnant. Lots of women got morning sickness and knowing her luck she'd be one of them. Opening the new box of soap she rolled her eyes. "Ok it didn't sour the whole batch was bad. This one stinks too." Then part way through the shower she panicked. What if she was already pregnant before he proposed and she didn't know it. "Kato come in here quick! I need you to smell the soap."

It was hard seeing Killian like this. It seemed whenever she came in he was under sedation, sleeping, or so depressed he didn't really want to talk. So, instead she just let him listen, telling him details about the day, about Cin messing up her garden and trying to teach him not to go near it. About Lisa getting closer and closer to her due date and the different relationships that were forming around the community. She enjoyed talking about the way the chips and humans had been mostly getting along so well since the festival. Many friendships had begun to form and a level of understanding between the two cultures had begun.

What Star didn't tell him was about the handful of chippequoti supremacists who had built their own set of houses further from the town, wanting to have very little if anything to do with the humans. They seemed be led by the very man who'd challenged Killian, whom she learned was name Kavis, (a name so similiar to Kafus she didn't even like to think it). Kavis seemed determined to seperate the Chips from the humans again, making plenty of noise among the chips about not forgetting their bloodlines and all that crap. If that kept up, he would become a problem. She hoped not. Killian couldn't handle another fight right now.

By the time Star got to take him home, Shanti was practically shoving him out the door. She kept muttering something about him being the most annoying patient she'd ever had and how stubborn he was. She had to chuckle, knowing exactly how Shanti felt. She'd dealt with it plenty herself. Home was better. He seemed a bit more responsive and his favorite part of the day seemed to be watching Claire as her motor skills continued to improve rapidly. She'd even begun to roll a little bit to get to an object she wanted.

Star was in the middle of cooking pies when Killian's heart-rate monitor started skyrocketing. She rushed from the kitchen to the bedroom where he looked liked he's just woken from a nap. "Another nightmare?" She asked with a sigh, relieved it wasn't anything more serious. She gently sat beside him, putting a small gentle hand on his chest, the very one with her ring. "You need to talk to me Killian. Keeping everything bottled up...well, you know what happened last time. Please, trust me. I can handle it. Talk about it, air it out, and maybe your nightmares will start to fade again."
**********************************************************************
Kato yawned as he came into the house, smiling as he was greeted by Anna. He frowned when she said he stank. "Really? I usually keep pretty clean..." He sniffed himself and shrugged. Maybe all the chemicals they used to keep things clean was burning his olfactory sensors. "Ok...I'll shower, then food." The night just got stranger from there, and by the fourth time of her mentioning something stinking, he got a hint of what was possibly going on. Either she had a tumor in the brain (unlikely) or she was pregnant.

He would have said something but he was far to tired for that talk at the moment. He barely even noticed when she pushed him away claiming she was too hot to cuddle. Whatever. He rolled back on his side of the bed and quickly fell asleep. The next morning he opened his eyes breathing a sigh of relief as he realized it was his day off. The four doctors in the colony had worked themselves into a healthy shift routine that gave them all the chance to rest and keep themselves healthy. With 300 people in the colony there was no shortage of people needing something.

Kato rolled over, wrapping and arm around Anna's waist and kissing her neck, but she protested. "I want to sleep." Giggling a little she pushed his hands away.
Since when had she chosen sleep over cuddeling? "C'mon, its our day off. We never get to do tis."
"Fine I know, its our day off and its late already." She sat up and hurried off for a shower. He sighed and rolled on his back. Even Anna had her off days sometimes. He almost drifed back to sleep when an urgent call from the bathroom got his heart pumping. He leapt out of bed, slowing as he realized she just wanted him to smell soap. He did. "Its fine, Anna." He gave her a little smile. "Let me take a quick blood test, ok? It could just be your body reacting to...something." Part of him really hoped it was a baby.
He took the blood and both of them sat by the machine waiting anxiously for the results. Positive. He looked over at Anna. "We are going to have a baby."

With less headache Killian could keep his eyes open and he glanced down at Star's hand resting on his chest. There was that ring and he felt badly for a moment. She married him and since then he'd been useless. Getting himself beat up, nearly killed, then breaking down and having all those nightmares like he was a freak of some sort. It was hardly a great way to start off being married.

Star was asking him to share the dream and he grabbed her hand. The ring rubbed against his palm and he shook his head slowly. "It was just a dream. I told you before there are some things I can't talk about." This dream was one of them. A dream that came back over and over, but he couldn't say it. What would she think if she knew that he even rationalized killing their daughter in his sleep? That was sick and he hated that he even thought like that. Even when he was awake he couldn't quite sort out why it was wrong if they were in that given situation. Circumstances depending on what they were could justify almost anything and he hated to admit that he was probably a little scary when it came to that stuff. All of it came back to the morals that he had been working so hard to figure out. The last fight he thought he did for all the right reasons and she was upset.

Killian looked into her eyes and he could almost sense that she wasn't about to let him go on this one. She was going to sit her and stare him down which didn't take much at this point. "I keep dreaming that you and Claire end up at the games." Gradually his heart rate started to rise again. Just having to talk about it was stressing him out and he began to break out into the sweats. "You got to the end, but....Star it was just the 3 of us." Shifting on the bed he put his back to her. She would know what had to be done from there and so did he. That was too much to say so he refused to say anything more. If he did she would know that he was a monster.

All the while he worked on calming his own breathing, but it wasn't working. Instead he found himself more and more stressed. He couldn't get up and he couldn't seem to get away from the thoughts. She was still there and staring at him. "I decided to kill both of you because I knew neither of you would last one more game and if I didn't do it whoever did next would be less concerned about you." Clenching his jaw he almost growled the last words. "I wanted it to be fast and as painless as possible."

Letting go of her hand he covered his face again. "Star I don't know if I'll make it. Everything is blurred between right and wrong. It seemed like the logical choice and so wrong and I couldn't stop myself. If we ended up there I know I would do it." Turning over in the bed he let his hands down from his face and looked at her with a blank expression. "I don't think the morals thing is working very well." Besides the beads of perspiration he didn't have any other indication of distress, no tears, or fidgeting. "Even when I went to fight that Chippequoti, all I could think about was killing him. I wanted to kill him and it would have been so easy a few times. I thought I was fighting him for moral reasons and you got so upset. You can't always be my conscience, but...Star I'm not getting it." He'd been so close to the mark and yet so far off. No matter how hard he tried it always seemed to come back and slam him.

******************************************************************************************

Anna hopped back into the shower and handed the soap bars out to Kato when she heard him come in. Poking her head out the curtain she felt her face fall when he said it was fine. No...no she couldn't be pregnant. Not yet. Of course he wanted to take a blood test and Anna reluctantly finished up her shower and wrapped a towel around herself before she sat down on the edge of the tub for Kato to do the blood test. It would be far more accurate than one of her little home tests. Not something that she had suspected he would keep handy at the house.

While they waited for the results she tried to laugh it all off. "Oh you had to keep it handy cause you were trying so hard. Lets see if you hit the jackpot." After what seemed like forever a little sign popped up on the machine and she paled. "Uh?........." Blinking her eyes a few times very slowly she stared at the screen and then back up at Kato "Are you sure?" Against everything else she really hoped his machine was wrong. Anna somehow thought the idea wasn't so bad a few weeks ago and now it was seeming less like a brilliant thought. Blood tests were almost 100% certain and she nodded her head. Closing her eyes for a few moments she rested her head against Kato's shoulder and tried to ignore the smell of his shirt. It smelled so bad.

Reaching across herself she grabbed his leg and squeezed slightly. Anna opened her eyes and looked up at him. "I hope you like babies." A serious expression came to her face. "I don't until they're about 12." He said the same thing everyone else must have said before him. "I know...I know...It's different when they're yours." Standing up she made a little twist with her hips and stared back at him. "Well it doesn't matter now how we do it. Wanna get me out of robe and see how I look before I get dressed?" Giggling a little she loosened the towel and threw it at him while she scampered for the bed.

************************************************************************

Pulling out her favorite yellow skirt Anna held it up and grinned. "It'll still fit for a few weeks." Now that she had the skirt picked out she just needed something exciting to pair with it so she chose a turquoise blouse with orange accented jewelry. Slipping into the clothes she did a quick brush through her hair and turned slowly around. A pivot still seemed to put her back out and she didn't want Kato getting all worried about her right now. "I'm ready for all your plans even if we just lounge. Might as well be pretty for you." Being dressed up and pretty was just something she enjoyed no matter how she felt. Grabbing Kato around the waist she stood on her tippy toes to give him a kiss. "I want to start wearing my heels again. It makes this so much easier."

Star tensed slightly as he described the horror of the rest of the dream. No wonder he didn't want to share. She took a trembling breath trying not to just react. She could see in his eyes and by the sweat on his brow that this dream had bothered him deeply. His admittance about still not getting morals confirmed that things had begun to bother him and he didn't know what to do about it. "I'm glad that the dream bothered you. I would be terrified of you if it didn't." She looked down at her knees trying to think how to put her feelings into words. "Morals...morals is that. It's knowing the logical isn't always the right thing. And sometimes you have to choose not to do the logical thing in order to do the right thing. With kavis, the duel was the logical thing...but for me...for your family...it wasn't the right thing. Killing me and Claire in the games could be considered logical in order to protect us from greater horrors. But you know that doing that would never ever be right which is why you are bothered. Make sense?"
The explanation wasn't all that helpful. Killian just stared at her for a moment and gingerly shook his head. "No. It doesn't make sense because I really thought I was doing the right thing even though it upset me." Somehow this logic thing was way harder than he thought to get over. "You wouldn't understand unless...Star." Sitting up a little it felt like his head was building pressure, but he needed to say this one thing. "It felt like the right thing cause I knew I could protect you and Claire, but I'm still responsible for the people in the colony. They agreed to bring the Chips here because I told them I would make sure they weren't treated as slaves. So its my job to make sure they aren't. What would we do? Just pick up and leave? What would we leave as a fair portion that wouldn't end up hurting both the Chips and Humans?"
Star folded her hands in front of her. "I suppose you're right. You do have a responsibility to the colony. I didn't oppose the fight in itself....I opposed the fact that you were still healing and putting yourself at risk of doing more damage to yourself. Think about it like this...what if he'd managed to do enough damage that you lost all sense of yourself. Even if you had won...you would be useless to do anything." She took a breath. "I think I would've been happier if you'd renegotiated with him. Agreed to challenge him but in a couple weeks after you'd healed. In situations of logic vs morals you've got to look for the compromise between the two and not always assume the logical answer is the only one."
This time he nodded and put a hand over his mouth. It was nauseating to move his head that much even this many days later. Some of it was the lack of sleep and he knew that. Always made headaches worse. Laying back in the bed he winced a little. "Yeah I see that point...It would have been nice to have thought of that when I agreed to the challenge."
Star pats his chest softly. "Try and get some rest. I'll be back with dinner a little later."
"You will be later. I'll make some soup. Nothing strong." She promised, staring at him worriedly from the door frame. "Use the button on the watch if you need me."
Despite Star saying he would be hungry Killian doubted it. Still he caught that look of concern. "I just need some sleep." Sometimes sleep masks were tempting in theory except that he always thought they were for girls and anything that pressed on his head hurt.
Star nodded, leaving him to rest.

She returned a few hours later with a hot towel and soup. She set the soup on the bed stand then gentle pushed down his pillow and slid the hot towel underneath his head at the base of his skull to help ease the tightness in his muscles and hopefully help relieve some of the pressure that was causing the headache. Next she dipped her fingers in the anti-seizure salve and rubbed it on his chest and a little on his temples. She'd heard that the salve, when applied to the temple, did wonders to relieve pressure in the skull for the chippequoti. When all that was done she pulled the bowl of warm soup into her hand and brought the spoon to his lips. "Don't be stubborn. You need to eat but you also need to stay laying down." She sighed. "Don't make this any more difficult than it has to be, Killian. Please let me feed you."
***************************************************************
The excitement that they were going to be parents was dampened somewhat by Anna' s hesitancy and fear about it. He listened quietly as she verbally process. "Its going to be great, Anna. You'll be a fantastic mom." She sort of brushed him off trying to bury her fear under that guise of flirtatiousness and coyness. He sighed lightly as the towel flew over his head and she sprinted away. That was her defense mechanism he was finding out. Sex and playfulness to try and distract him and herself from whatever issue was at hand.

He sighed and stood up. His mind was already generating ideas of how to start getting her excited and reassure her about the pregnancy. But it would take some prep-work.
***
"No heels. Not yet." Kato smirked, putting gentle hands on her shoulders. "And don't think I didn't see that little limp, I know your back is still bothering you." He took her hand and led her out the house. He didn't tell her where they were going but kept her guessing by weaving close to the path that would've taken them to the lake, then taking them towards the playground, but turning away at the last moment and heading towards the ships. When he was certain she was fully confused and could see she was getting tired he took them to one of the houses and knocked on the door.

Shanti appeared, her hair tied up in a bun. "C'mon in." She waved to them as if having expected them. Kato smirked at Anna's confusion. They stepped inside and a music box was playing soft relaxing instrumental music. She took them to another room. Inside was a small bed with clean sheets, and candles softly burning, lighting the otherwise dark room. "I hope you like massages." Kato says with a smile. "Shanti was a massage therapist in her last colony and she gives excellent ones. It'll help with tension and pain in your muscles."
"Kato mentioned that your nose has been sensitive." Shanti says bringing over a box. She opens it revealing several different colored sticks. "Incense sticks. Choose whichever one you like and I'll burn it for you."

Laying in the bed all day was getting beyond boring even if he spent the majority of it sleeping. The clink of silverware on a dish sounded in the doorway and he opened his eyes. It had been more of a doze rather than real sleep. He felt worthless with her pushing down and putting the cloth behind his head. Then the salve that she insisted on rubbing on his chest. Those were things he was pretty sure he could have done for himself. Bringing his hands up he rested them on her wrists when she reached for his head. After a second he put his hands down and let her finish putting the salve on his temples. Each brush of her fingers felt mildly soothing. Just as he started to relax she held the bowl over his chest. Killian stared at her for a moment and growled. "I want to feed myself." It sounded stupid to say it as an adult, but he was tired of being home and having her feed him like this.

Star sighed at him and left, taking the bowl with her. A few minutes later she returned with a bottle. She'd painstakingly poured the soup with its vegitables and meats into a bottle so that he could feed himself with minimal head movement and limit the risk of him spilling it all over himself. "There." She hands it to him.

Letting out a long sigh he watched her leave. That would be the first time she actually got mad at him and decided not to feed him food. In a way Killian didn't care. He really didn't feel hungry since he wasn't doing anything all day. Then Star returned with a bottle....full of soup. "What the hell?" Groaning in frustration he looked at her. She was getting way to crafty for this and if he wasn't careful he was pretty sure she'd puree the next meal. Reluctantly he took the bottle and looked at her from the corner of his eyes again. "Thank you dear."

"You're welcome, hun." She replied with a hint of sarcasm and a tiny smirk. "Now to feed the other baby." She stood and walked around the bed to pick up Claire. She set the girl in a nearby feeding chair. With a tiny spoon and some sort of pureed green goop she began feeding Claire, slowly easing her body off just breast milk and into the world of real food.

That sarcasm in her tone. She would....she would do it if he wasn't nice. Killian rolled his eyes slightly when she passed by saying she was going to feed the other baby. Being stuck in bed he was limited in any kind of gesture so he settled with a scowl when she started to put the green goop in Claire's face. Momentarily he found himself lost in thought just holding the bottle and then he realized he was supposed to be eating. Quickly as he could he dumped the food into his mouth and swallowed most of it whole. It was all a good idea till about an hour later. Holding onto his stomach he shifted in the bed uncomfortably. Gulping all that food was not a good idea when he had a headache. Should have taken it a few bites at a time to let it settle. When Star came in he tried to look as natural as possible and even gave her a grin.

He was a horrible liar and even worse at hiding his facial expressions. She grabbed a large bowl and put it at his hand. "If you puke on my bed you're cleaning it up." She warned.

"I might do that just to move." Killian grumbled at her and took the bowl. "Don't worry its just acid burps." He hated that when it was nasty puke that climbed to the back of your throat and you could barely taste it and then the food would all slide back down just to repeat a few minutes later.

"Maybe next time you'll eat slower." She said with no sympathy. The man had brought this on himself. She might be worried, but she was done feeling sorry for him.

*****************************************************

Kato was always sweet and so concerned about her health. If she had known that he was going to spend his whole day off worrying about her, she may not have been quite as eager to get going. Instead he her all lined up for a message because of her back pain. Still she kept the same surprised grin on her face. "Of course I like messages." She was nervous. Somebody putting their hands on her back was not a pleasant thing if they applied pressure. Stepping into a room she tried not to sniff anything too deeply and then Shanti stepped in with the incense sticks and let her sniff them till she picked one.

Apple plum was a great scent and she got herself stripped down to her underwear for the message. Laying on the table she took a few deep breaths as she was instructed and peered over at Kato. "Are you getting one after me?" Nodding a little she put her head back where it was supposed to be and let the woman start her work. Surprisingly Shanti was much more gentle than she had anticipated. As for Kato telling the nurse about her nose she assumed that it meant he told her that they were expecting. They were going to have a little talk about that later. Even if he was excited she didn't want anyone to know that she was pregnant and she certainly didn't want to have to write that in a letter to her father. It was about time he got an update and she wasn't even married. Having a baby with a doctor that wasn't even well known and topping it off with a baby in the middle of a refugee village. There were so many things wrong with this. As much as she loved it, she knew her father would do nothing but worry himself sick over the situation especially now that she was pregnant. Maybe it would just be better to schedule a visit to see her father and tell him about the work they did in the village. Let him meet some of them and that could smooth it over. Perhaps it was time to face her dad after all these years. Things weren't so bad.

***********************************************************************

Walking next to Kato on the way back to the house Anna peered up at him. "I know I'm kinda needy and all...Can I need a few more things?"

"Absolutely. Don't ever be afraid to tell me what you need, Anna."

Taking a breath she couldn't help herself from getting a little nervous. "I want to get married before the baby is born and please don't tell anyone about this."

Kato laughed and had a wide grin on his face. "I figured as much. The question is...do you want to be married here at the colony or in private, elsewhere?"

"You mean you didn't tell Shanti about the baby?" Anna was a little surprised and it was good thing she didn't jump down his throat over it. "We could be married here at the colony. At least one person has to have the official licensing to do this sort of thing around here."

"I believe there is. I remember one of my patients mentioning that her husband was an officiant before they had to flee the planet." Kato stood before her and wrapped her in her arms. "Open ceremony or closed to invited guests only?"

A little smirk came to her face. "Why don't we have an open ceremony and make a giant party out of it?"

Kato nods. "I'm certain everyone will be thrilled to have something to celebrate. I'll assume you want to plan the decorations, location, food and what-not. Did you have a time frame in mind?"

That's when the smile got bigger on her face. "Within the month. Let's say 3 weeks." Anna didn't want to wait till she was big and fat to have the wedding. "I'll still be my size and I won't look like a fat whale coming up the aisle or have giant oversized boobs from nursing. That and I have a certain someone in mind that I want to invite."

"Your father?" He asked cautiously.

"Yes...." Anna met his gaze for a moment. "Its the first time I've had my life sorted out and I've done something worth while. He might be proud to know I'm his daughter now. I think he would like you too."

"Even if he's not...I don't care. You're the one I fell in love with." He kissed her. "Ok. How about this? Send him a message, plan the wedding. We'll leave in a week to get supplies and a dress and a real ring and...if you want or he wants, we could even pick him up...depending where he lives."

Anna shook her head. "No...I don't want him to pick out the wedding ring or have any say about that." She knew her father would in his generosity pick something massive and hugely expensive. Probably something that could about get a person killed for it. "We'll meet him at one of his offices and bring him here. We can plan the wedding and do the shopping on that planet. He will want to do something nice and big for us. I think we should let him meet those that we're helping first and let him decide to help the colony instead." They desperately needed some supplies and no one had ventured out yet. It was still too dangerous.

Kato nodded. "Sounds good to me." He takes a breath. "I'm excited, Anna. And, I know you've been a worried about this pregnancy but I want you to know I'm here for you, always. Not matter your concerns, your fears, your needs, I want you to tell me about them. I expect you to tell me about them so I can be your husband and support you. Promise you'll communicate?"

"What do you think I was just doing?" Poking him in the side she giggled. "I'm really trying out this little thing called trust and so far I don't think its such a bad idea."

"Its really nice, isn't it." He nodded and chuckled.

"Mmhmmm." Anna skittered in front of him and stood on her tip toes. It still wasn't enough because she was on the downhill side of the slope. "I think you'll have to trade spots with me for this to work."

"Or..." Kato lifts her up, his hands folded beneath her bottom providing a temporary seat as her legs wrapped around his waist. "There are some benefits to this Chippequoti bone thing. You're so light."

Giving a little squeak she wrapped her arms around his neck. "I like having a big strong doctor to carry me around."

*****************************************************************************************

With the day for the final check up coming Killian was trying his best to behave. It was almost impossible the last few days. He felt grouchy and sore and he wanted to move or do something and he wasn't allowed. Part of him knew that he could have, but it scared him to think that he was almost like this permanently so he reluctantly did what he was supposed to. Apparently the headaches he didn't hide all that well and Killian begged the doctor the best he could with his green eyes. Silently trying to express the desperation to move to do something.

The Chippequoti doctor came in for the final analysis and she nodded. "It looks fine. Just very careful." She gazed into his eyes. "There are no second chances. You can't hurt your head again while you're recovering. It was lucky that we caught it in time. If you had gone home and taken a nap or anything you would have died. Even a few more pounds of pressure during that fight and you would have started seriously hemorrhaging again. You're brain needs time to heal. Do you understand that?" Since the last round she had thought he would be careful and it appeared that the idea of being careful was a fleeting thought in this one's mind. "Sometimes I think you have the curse of the restless." Getting up she glanced at Star and nodded. "He can get up. Nothing vigorous and for heaven's sake keep him out of fights. His brain has got to heal before he goes jarring it around again. This last round could have very easily killed him."

Killian gingerly got out of bed as soon as the doctor left. He was never so happy to be free and get rid of a catheter again. "Hey." Grinning happily he walked over to where Star was and gave her a hug. She just didn't seem as pleased as he thought she should be. "I'm guessing the doctor gave you the whole story about the fight nearly killing me."

Sheepishly he looked at her. "Well....I don't want to fight anybody for a long time. Don't worry about that." He remembered the problem with wrestling and saying he didn't want to wrestle anyone either. "Star, I give you my word. Nothing wild until the doctor clears me. I knew it was bad and I'll admit that I was actually a little bit scared when Kato found the brain damage all over again." Hopefully that would make Star feel better.

Star's jaw was tight the entire way through check up, especially when the chip doctor came in to do the final exam. She was glad that he could finally move around safely again but just hearing about how close he'd come to death again was enough to ruin her day. Killian of course was looking rather pleased with himself and wrapped his arms tightly around her. She didn't really have the heart to return it.
"I'm guessing the doctor gave you the whole story about the fight nearly killing me."
She gave him a look. "What do you think?"
"Star, I give you my word. Nothing wild until the doctor clears me. I knew it was bad and I'll admit that I was actually a little bit scared when Kato found the brain damage all over again."
"I guess we'll see." She replied coolly, pulling out of his arms and walking back towards the house with Claire on her back. Honestly she didn't believe him. If he was instigated or some damn "logical" situation came up...he'd put himself right into danger again and probably get himself killed. Star caught a glimpse of Kavis in the distance. If he continued to cause trouble and threaten Killin, she was going to have to do something about it. Poison came to mind, and for several minutes she seriously considered it. If it came down to it, her husband's health and well-being and the safety of the colony over murdering a chippequoti...she'd may very well do it. She frowned at herself. Seriously, all this talk of morals and you're considering that? Star rubbed her eyes. According to Killian's standards it logical...but I'm not Killian. Murder is murder.
"Hmm?" Killian had said something, no doubt noting the deep frown on her face.
"Nothing." She lied. What else was she going to say. Knowing Killian he might very well encourage her if he knew what was going through her head at the moment.

She got to the door and smiled lightly at the pie left on the porch for them with a note on top. "Berry pie. With love, Lisa and Frank." She picked it up and took inside, putting it in the oven to warm up. She set Claire down on her blanket to play with her wooden blocks. The very same ones with the names Mike and Timo carved into them. Killian said something about her smiling or lack there of and her mind wandered. It was true...she'd tried...but she hadn't felt that happy for the most part since...since that three week interval where Killian had reached his breaking point and completely shut her out. She'd pushed everything down in order to help him recover, not exactly getting the closure she needed or wanted. Then, the gillicks had attacked and everything had been destroyed. As if that hadn't been bad enough, Killian had nearly been killed. Then Timo had been killed and Mike had died soon after. She hadn't even had time to grieve them properly because all her energy and focus had been in trying to help Killian and make sure he didn't hurt himself, or get lost. She'd come to the edge of her patience time and time again as he asked the same questions over and over, remembering nothing for more than a few minutes at a time. On top of that she'd been looked to for leadership by the colony. There had been no time to breath.

Star pulled the pie from the oven, setting it on the table, watching it steam and breathing the sweet fragrance of fruits and berries. Finally, things had calmed. He'd come back to her...only to be nearly snatched away again by a stupid fight. Again she'd had to push down her anger and pain to take care of him. His dreams got worse and now she knew what they were about. Anyone else would have run out the door and never looked back. A man willing to kill his own wife and child because it would have been the logical thing to do. She sat at the table going through the motions of cutting the pie and setting it on plates for both of them. Killian sat across from her. She'd barely looked at him or spoken to him since his release from bed rest. She takes a bite of the pie. It was nice...but it was soured by her current mood and thought process.

Partway through the pie Killian asked something along the lines of "are you ok?" Star set her fork down and looked up at him. "No. I'm not." Her tone was sharp, she knew that, but she had been holding back for far too long and Mike wasn't here anymore to help him see past his own nose. She'd been nice and gentle and understanding but all of that had come at a painful price to herself. "I have been the best damn wife you could get through all of this crap that we've had going on since that period where you ignored me for three weeks and I haven't gotten a single thankyou or a word of appreciation for it this entire time." She coughed and held up a stern finger before he could speak. Of course he'd try and thank her now, she was mentioning it...but she had much more to say.

"I feel like you don't value my feelings or my concerns unless there is some sort of logic behind it. I'm not allowed to be angry or upset when you do certain things because they are perfectly "logical." Time and time again you have been putting your own logic and beliefs about what you should do above my concerns, my feelings and you don't even seem to realize how much its hurting me. In addition I have to spell everything out for you or it took a kick in the pants from Mike for you to take any sort of initiative in our relationship. I know relationships are hard for you but how often do you ask about me, about how I'm feeling or doing? How often do you pause and think about how your actions are affecting me?" She coughed again and drank from a glass of water. Her throat felt like it had begun to close from the emotion. Everything she'd been holding in till this point was pouring out in a torrent. This was why she released things in intervals. Part of her felt bad for unloading on him like this...the other part felt like he fully deserved it and she was going to make sure she got every last word out that she needed to.

"I love you so intensely Killian but right now I am having a really, really hard time liking you. I have put up with so much crap these last few months on top of taking care of Claire practically by myself and then you just had to go and add to it with that stupid fight. I don't ask for thankyou's, but I'd appreciate acknowledge once in a while." She briefly noted it was getting hot in here and little harder to breath. "I don't complain...but right now I am because apparently you don't get it unless people specifically tell you what to do. I need to be affirmed, I need my feelings and opinions to mean something important to you no matter the lack of logic. I need you to show me you love me everyday. Do things around the house without me having to ask, ask me how I am, bring me little gifts, take Claire of my hands so I can have time to myself...something!" Star threw her hands in the air then wiped a small line of sweat off her forehead. She leaned back in her chair, wheezing slightly, almost having to laugh at his stunned look. She almost felt bad...almost.

Killian had tried to speak up once or twice and then gave up. She was on a roll and he winced once or twice when her voice raised. It wasn't as much for the headache as it was related to the fact that he honestly didn't notice a few of those things. Some of it couldn't be helped either, such as gillick's attacking the head injury the first time. Leaning in his chair a little further back his brow pulled down into a frown. Star had never done something like this before and he was a little nervous. "Yeah that sounds pretty bad. I did just ask if you ok though." He was slightly concerned that this time didn't count or something ridiculous like that.

Star sighed and crossed her arms with a nod. "Yes. Yes you did. Kudos for that."

"Could you....?" Taking a breath he thought for a second and decided to rephrase what he was going to say. "I'll uh try to keep that stuff in mind. Um....I really am trying Star." This wasn't the time for an excuse and he didn't like making excuses about anything, no matter how deserving. An excuse was at this point more than only going to make it worse.

“I know, Killian. I know.” She rubbed her forehead. “I’m sorry...for exploding like that. Its just been so much lately, you know?”

Sighing he glanced at the outdoors and nodded. "Yeah it has been. My brain works just fine. I'll take over my regular duties and try not...I won't smash my head on anything." Mentally he was adding a note to try and remember to do something nice for her. He didn't really know anything about house keeping. Only thing he'd ever cleaned in his life was a ship and all you had to do was clean out the stuff and spray it down with disinfectant. That probably didn't help in a house.

"You'd better not." She smirked, then shook her head at him. "I uh...I'm sorry about Mike. Kato told me that he told you. I was trying to wait until you were better."

Killian just nodded and stared at the table. He didn't really care to say much about it. Still she never let those things rest. "Yep...It was hard. He uh, told me about Timo too. I'm sorry he was kinda your kid."

"Yeah...yeah he was." Star sniffed and wiped a tear that rolled down her cheek. "He went out a hero...but...too young. Way too young. Still, I don't think he'd change things if he could've. He loved being a Captain. Rescuing people. Helping..."

Sometimes there wasn't anything to say and Killian figured this was one of those times. Quietly he listened to her and waited for her words to break off before he reached across the table and grabbed one of her hands. He still didn't know what to say so he sat there and figured she'd pull away or cry whatever else she had to.

She glanced up at him and smiled sadly. "I'm ok. Thanks for listening. To everything."

"Just cause I hit my head didn't mean you had to wait till I could walk again to tell me this stuff." Killian smirked a little. "Mighta given me something to think about besides the ceiling, Cin making trouble for you, and how bad my head hurt."

"Yeah well, I'm not the type to sucker-punch someone when they are already down." She shrugs.

"Oh...." Killian frowned slightly. "Guess I didn't see it like that. Just stuff I could do better. Besides I don't mind if you tell me that stuff. At least I know I'm useful for something."

"You're useful for many things Killian, including keeping my life interesting. Sometimes too interesting." She turned her hand so she could hold his. "But if there is one thing I can count on...you always care about me and Claire. You may not always factor my feelings into your decisions...but you always factor our well-being. And I know I'm always safe with you...just sometimes I wish you'd look out for your own safety more." She raises an eyebrow at him.

Nodding a little he snorted. "Yeah well....this last round had me rethinking a few theories I had about life." Killian had no idea if she knew about this one or not. Actually he had several little superstitions or thoughts that didn't seem to strike others as normal, but they'd always worked for him and this was just one that didn't turn out so well lately. It could still work though he was thinking it should be reconsidered. "One thought I had was that uh...I was just as safe in the middle of a fight as I was at home. More people die at home anyway." The theory was proved in part though continuing to test it was a bad idea. "May not be the best one to live by these days."

"If you really believe that, then why did you have Me and Claire stay home every time you went out on a raid? Hmm?" Star asks, calling him out on his theory.
"Honestly I think you just feel more comfortable in a fight sometimes. You know exactly what do, how to react...and that's more safe to you somehow then coming home and having to deal with things like relationships, morals, dirty diapers." She smirked.

Killian narrowed his eyes slightly. "Cause whenever you got kids involved it changes those numbers. You're more likely to die cause you'll do something stupid to protect them. I didn't want to be distracted when I was fighting and uh...." As much as he hated to admit it she had it pretty close. "Sometimes a fight is easier to gauge than home."

"Yeah, I know. That's why you ask questions and talk about things rather than avoiding them." She stood and put the pie away. "Just promise me you'll think about the things I said. And if you need a reminder on some I'll be more than happy to give it to you." She smirked.

He wasn't sure if she just accused him of being an abrasive or aggressive person. Either way it wasn't really bad. Just meant that he didn't like to let things get away. "I think I'm gonna go outside for a bit. Need to check on the bear." Getting up from the table he wandered to the door and stepped outside. It felt so good to get out of the house and finally go somewhere even if it was only a few feet till the bear came barreling toward him. "Hey..." The bear stopped just short of running into him and stood up on its hind legs. The brown bear had gotten quite a bit bigger in the last few weeks. In fact Killian remembered when the bear was quite a bit smaller. "Cin...C'mon" Killian stuffed his hands into his pockets and he could hear the bear ambling along behind him till it decided to wander in front.

Naturally the bear seemed to think that they were going to the river which they were till Kavis stopped Killian on his walk. "You're finally recovered eh?" The Chip walked over and peered into the young Chippequoti's face. "Its time you learn about your own people." If they could he would help the leader learn what it meant to be Chippequoti. It was pathetic to think that they had one so capable and yet ignorant. The first and most important was to make sure he learned about their customs and order. Humans were not to be elevated as they were and his wife....she performed her duties well so at least there was that much going for him.

Learning about the Chips was something that Killian had agreed to so he nodded. "Aye...we're...Cin and I were headed to the river. Might as well come with us."

During the time in which the Captain was recovering Kavis had done a bit of his own searching to find out what he could. This sort of work would require a bit of planning and careful grooming to be sure that Killian was crafted into the kind of leader he should be. Kavis at 135 years old and just barely turning silver in a few spots knew far better than to make inquiries himself. Instead he had several friends that gathered what they could from the humans. Some of the humans had been around longer than others and they knew more about the captain. One thing that pleased the older Chippequoti was the many reports that seemed to indicate Killian could be seemingly cold and overly logical. It was the logic that pleased the Chip. He liked to know that there was some reason to the lad's head and he wanted to be sure that the sensitive humans did not discourage his perfectly good mind. In fact that there were many things about the captain that were more Chippequoti than human and now was the perfect time to shape him.

Sitting down at the river with the older man Killian watched his bear go into the water to play. His head was still hurting so he laid back on the grass and he noticed the other Chip did to. "What is the first lesson then?" Though he was not overly amused with the idea of these lessons he knew they were coming anyway.

"The first and most important lesson is how Chippeqouti protect their race." Without even looking to see what expression his student had he continued on with his story. "It is critical to know the blood of your mate. This determines the strength of future generations. If there is not enough strength to the bones the Chip will die of disease. With too much a Chip will die of deformities. We have created an order out of necessity. It is a delicate balance to preserve the people." Kavis paused for a moment and sighed. "Some of us to maintain order among our own and preserve our way of life have chosen to live separate. No doubt you will hear rumor of us thinking of ourselves as better. It is not the case. We must survive." Finally he ventured a glance at the young leader and he noticed the thoughtful look.

It at least made sense. An argument that Killian couldn't really see the tremendous flaw in. If they wanted to live separate he wasn't going to tell them no. "I can't control how you choose to live your lives. All the people here are free to make their own way of life, including the humans." Sitting up again he rubbed the side of his head carefully.

Slowly Kavis nodded his head. "Of course. I and the others are greatly relieved to hear that you are willing to learn our ways and respect the customs. For now I'll leave you to your afternoon. We will talk again later." Getting up off the ground he started back for his part of the town a little further out. It went well. In time they would have Killian on their side. He was young and receptive to new ideas offered if they were logical and logic was one thing that Kavis knew quite well. Just so long as he could ensure that the human's didn't sway the Chip captain's thoughts anymore. Perhaps the most dangerous was the wife. In time he would find out who the real influences were on Killian's life by asking about friends. The less friends the easier it would be to turn him their way.

So far Kavis had been a reasonable individual and Killian didn't mind the man. While he didn't care to live under the entire blood rule system it made sense and he was a little worried about Claire now. What if the girl really didn't end up with both immune systems operating to compensate for the lack in the other? There wasn't anything he could do about it now.

When Killian got back to the house he was already feeling tired and he laid down on the couch just above where Claire was playing on the floor. "Got my first lesson today. Kavis gave me the whole blood line speech thing." Closing his eyes Killian took a few deep breaths and relaxed a little more into the couch. "You sure that both of Claire's immune systems are working?" From the sounds of it she potentially could lose her health and so could Star. Star had been coughing and he remembered the baby coughing a little bit the other day.

"I'm pretty sure both of Claire's immune systems are working, yes. If she's cranky is cause she's going through another growth spurt." Star's voice sounded a bit strange as she approached the couch and sat next to his legs. She had an annoyed look on her face...her face which was comically swollen on the right side. So much so one of her eyelids nearly covered one eye. "Kato already came by and gave me some medication. Apparently there were strawberries in that damn pie. I'm beginning to think some higher power out there hates me." She sighed with a slight wheeze. "Good news is the chip blood probably saved me. Normally my entire throat would've closed up within a few minutes and I wouldn't be able to breath, now I just look like a pumpkin. Fun right?" She adds sarcastically. Poor Killian, he looked completely lost as to what to do. Star patted his leg. "Don't worry. The swelling will start going down in a few minutes. Thank god for modern medicine."

She folded her hands in her lap, looking at him as seriously as she could with a half swollen face. It wasn't easy. "I don't trust Kavis...and not just because his name is eerily similar to Kafus. From what I know he's a Chippequoti supremacist. Even Sooni doesn't like him. Don't take anything he says at face value, no matter how logical or innocent it sounds." Her lips pursed. "In fact, next time...I'm going with you. I'd like to hear what he has to say about Chip customs."

Kato was in his element. He had a romantic side that didn't get to come out very often with the amount of work he always had to do and Anna was pretty easy to please most of the time. That didn't keep him from wanting to take advantage of every moment leading up to the wedding. He decided until after the wedding he wasn't going to say a word about the baby. Right now, he was just going to make her feel like the most amazing wife in the world. It started small, coffee and breakfast waiting on her bedside table when she woke up after he'd gone to work. A little picnic near the lake during his lunch break, and flowers waiting for her in vase on the table at night. She barely saw him for the next week, as he picked up extra shifts from the other doctors in order to get the vacation and honeymoon with Anna. Though he wasn't around except for the night time he made sure she always felt his presence through the gifts left in random places and the love notes on her pillow.

The beginning of the three week vacation started today, and he was loving it. He spent a good portion of the morning was spent just sleeping and didn't get up until Anna had lunch ready. After lunch they packed up the ship and headed off to Anna's father's planet. About a three day journey...and if all went well, they'd be back in eight days with two days left to prepare for the wedding. Plenty of time to put up the sort of decorations Anna wanted to. Kato looked like a little boy the way he grinned as he put the ship on autopilot and turned around to snatch her in his arms. "Three beautiful days to ourselves. How does that sound?" Kato asked, giving her a quick kiss.
"There are games on the ship we can play. " He gave her look as that mischievous smile came to her face. "I'm a little nervous to ask what sort of games you're thinking about. Let's start small...remember, I'm a stick in the mud." He held off taking them to the bedroom as long as possible. He wanted it to be a surprise. He delayed with some board games, food, general talk but eventually they found their way to the bedroom.

He couldn't keep the smile off his face as she opened the door. The night before he'd been up half the night setting this up while she thought he'd been on call. There were flower petals scattered all over the bed and on the floor. Candles (fake of course) glowed on the nightstands. A gift basket of fruits, breads, juice and other such things sat on a table in the corner, and another one of his love notes was tucked next to her pillow. He pulled off her sweater. "Shall I draw you a hot bath, love?" He asks in a mischievous tone wrapping his arms around her waist from behind, and kissing her neck. "I can massage your feet, then after your bath massage your back or...whatever else you desire."

Killian had grown used to waiting for someone to come into his line of vision when they were talking with him. He didn't want to turn his head anyway. Even though getting outside had been nice his head was hurting again and he wanted to nap, but not get left out of the action. Feeling her weight on the edge of the sofa Killian pulled his legs toward himself to make a little more room for her and opened his eyes. "Star!" Sitting up much straighter now he studied her puffy face. "What the hell happened to you?" If someone did this to her....who would do something like this? It was horrifying and enraging all at the same time.

Turned out it was some sort of allergic reaction. He'd never seen that kind of reaction. Star was joking about it and he couldn't help wincing some. Made him a little scared to touch her face or anything like that. With swelling it had to hurt. Like usual Star was trying to tell him it would all be fine or something to that effect and then her face began to contort.

With her face like that she definitely commanded his attention. Killian blinked a few times when she brought up the Kavis incident. He'd been so distracted with her little problem that he forgot about the other Chippequoti. "He uh...." Shrugging a little Killian sighed. "Alright, but I didn't actually go find him. Kavis found me out walking." It hadn't even been that long and Killian started to wonder how the older Chip knew that. He wasn't even outside that long and the man had already been there. Wasn't long enough to be reasonable for him to have heard unless he had some kind of connections. "Whose Sooni?" It was a name that Killian thought should be familiar, but he couldn't seem to bring the face or place that he should know to go with it. After the brief explanation of the person Killian nodded. "I don't remember meeting them." Apparently he hadn't officially met the person though he should have known who they were.

"About this problem with Kavis." Killian stared into Star's face. He still couldn't help staring a little bit. It looked painful. "What do you want me to do next time he randomly finds me? Bring him here or something?" If he really was a supremacist then there would be some serious issues to face in the future. Even if the Chip had come across as reasonable Killian was more inclined to believe Star. She was perhaps the only friend he had left and he felt that he could trust. From now on he was going to be on his guard around Kavis. "Ok...." At least Star had a reasonable proposal. "I'm sorry I know I keep staring, but are you ok? You're face is just so...it looks like it hurts."

It was suddenly like Kato didn't exist. Anna would wake up in the mornings and he was gone, but then those little crumpled reminders made her smile. More often than not she rolled all over his little love notes and she started to look forward to finding it in the bed somewhere. He always worked so hard and he did more than his share. She couldn't have imagined that he would stay with her through the shooting, lies, and now a pregnancy. Kato had been very gentle in his approach on the subject and he had listened to her. They hadn't spoken about the baby since then and she wanted to be sure that after they were married her father knew and then they could talk about it more openly.

Anna had been packing their bags and she was more than ready to be leaving. However, Kato would likely need one day. As he drug through the door after his last shift she put the food on the table in front of him. "You sleep as late as you want in the morning. I've already got your things packed so there is no rush in the morning." Even though she was a little tired herself she got the dishes done after dinner and then got ready for bed.

In many ways it was pathetic for her to be wore out so easily. Kato was doing far more for the last several weeks and she was just tired out doing nothing most of the day. Anna had managed to get her housework done, cooking, cleaning, and packing. That was about it. About mid morning the next day she got up to see that Kato was still sleeping. Leaning over she gently kissed him on the forehead and slipped out of the covers. Pulling them back up over Kato she tucked him in before leaving the room. Lunch was something simple because she didn't want to have to do much cleaning after the meal.

As soon as they finished the small meal of veggies and sandwiches she grabbed the garbage bag and put it by the door. Kato knew to grab it and load it outside by the neighbor's door. The neighbor had offered to take the garbage to the dump for them so they could get a decent start to their trip. As soon as she finished helping Kato pack Anna started for the room, but he seemed to be especially chatty and he wanted her to come to the navigation center for take off. Anna was so tired after all that activity and a nap sounded good. Given how hard he had worked she couldn't really deny him a few more minutes of her time. The little woman smiled at him as they breached the magnetic barrier and he set it to autopilot. "Ooh you know what 3 days means." Gazing into his eyes she grinned. She had a lot of games they could play and then he had get all nervous on her. "Nothing to worry about. I'll just shake you up a little. Can't let you get too settled in your ways."

Still they were taking forever getting to the nap and Anna found herself hitting a second wind about time they finished a second game of checkers. Kato was definitely soaking up all the attention and time he could get. "Seems my doctor needed some time with just me." Giggling a little she squiggled down in her seat so she could reach across the table and play footsie with him.

She was so busy flirting with Kato that Anna didn't notice the room till he stopped. "Ah!" Nearly squeaking with delight she clapped her hands together and turned toward him. "I've got to be the luckiest girl for five galaxies." Pulling him into the room with her she kissed him and fidgeted a little as she tried to help him get her sweater off. "Mmmmm....I think after all this work the doctor gets to write the prescription." Sometimes she couldn't resist making naughty references. That note she was so curious about and she couldn't help wanting to read it and yet she was torn because he was right here for her for 3 weeks. So she should relish the time with him and save the note for later? Yet she was feeling terribly greedy and wanting both right now. "Sooo..." On the way to the bathroom for the bath she stroked his shoulder. "Do I get to read that note you have on the bed? Do you read it, or shall I save it for a day when you're at work?"

"Well, if he approaches you while you're out and I'm not around then use your watch to send me a message. If I'm able I'll come find you and join the conversation." She gently touches her swollen face as Killian asks about it. "It's not very comfortable but it doesn't exactly hurt." She sighed. "It could be worse." She stands picks up Claire. "Ugh, the medication is making me drowsy. I'm going to bed."

Kato shrugged at Anna's question. "I could read it aloud while you bathe." He offered. "But I might be a little distracted." That seemed to please her so while the tub filled with water and she got in the bath he retrieved the letter. He sat opposite her on the floor and opened it up.
"Before I met you I was a lonely man, pining for a love I couldnt have and a future that was full dull and grey. I had no dreams or aspirations aside from the preservation of my own life and the lives i happened across. I was of a single focus and everything around me was grey. then you came aboard that ship and things began to take on a new light. Who knew it would take a shot in my back to open my eyes to the wonder that is you.
You didn't know it but I often sat by your frozen coffin telling you of all my fears, my pains, and guilt of the things I had to do to protect timo and the rest. I chose you because I knew you were the only one who wouldn't judge or reprimand me even if you heard and I continue to feel the same about you even now.
And then I grew old, watching my life wasteing away, my skin darkened and my hair turned gray and I regretted not taking advantage of the first woman to show genuine interest in me. Your confession was a dagger of regret to pierce me and yet the world continued to gain more color. At least my final days would be spent on the arms of one who fully loved and accepted me.
You know the rest of the story and I am ever so glad it happened. I have dreams now because of you. Dreams of a peaceful fulfilling life with a family around me. Dreams of little adventures, discovering new things about the other even years later. I dream about holding my hands around your waist with our baby between us. I dream about telling them stories of how we met and our adventures. I dream of growing old with you and celebrating our grandchildren. Now tell me your dreams, that we may fulfill them together." Kato set the more down and looked up at her with a soft smile.

It had been two weeks since Sooni had challenged and nearly beaten the chippequoti she'd been interested in. It had been a difficult fight but she'd proven herself. At least she'd thought she had. He had spoken or fine near her since. And then she'd found out that he had fallen under Kavis and joined the more radical chippequoti group who had no interest in cohabitating with humans. A sadness. At least the majority of the other chips showed her respect now.

Since the illness that had swept through the humans she'd been offered many jobs as a home care nurse, caring for chips and humans alike recovering from various illnesses and surgeries. She'd even been recruited by Kato to help out as a nurse and learn about human and chip medicine. She'd readily accepted, eager to do something more than a servant's work.

Sooni passed by a group of humans and chips working on building a meeting/dining hall. "Sooni!" She looked over her shoulder as one of the chips left the group and trotted over to her. "I'm Perrin. I saw your fight at the corral a few weeks ago. I wanted to say I was impressed by your skill even as a weak blood."
Sooni nodded. "Thankyou." She turned to walk away a light smile on her face. It was nice to be acknowledged.
"Sooni." She looked back over at him.
"A group of chips are getting together tonight by the lake to talk about some things. Chips only. Join us?"
Sooni nodded. "I'll be there."
Person nodded in approval and hurried back off to work, leaving her to wonder what they'd be talking about.

Anna slipped into the warm water and leaned back in the tub. If there was one nice thing about being short it was how she could actually lay in the tub without being at an awkward angle. Her knees barely poked above the surface of the water and her shoulders were covered in the soapy bubbles. Closing her eyes she had a little grin on her face while Kato read to her. She slowly peeled one eye open and then the other when he mentioned talking to her while she was in the ship all those years. Years that had passed by and she hadn't been aware of them.

It was shocking to know that he thought about her all that time. Pushing against the tub she sat up a little straighter when Kato finished reading to her. "So you knew all that time?" While it was flattering it was in a way a difficult. Kato was a hard headed man in his own way. "You have a good heart and you're so hard headed." Anna smiled a little as she put her arms on the side of the tub and rested her chin on her hands. "What I dream of for the future...." With a little sigh she stared at him. "That changed since we met. I first thought we would try to get away from the crew. You and I would escape and go live quietly on a lonely little planet with a clinic. Thought that after we changed systems and I was a slave that I would never see you again. So I planned a way to escape or at least make the most of things. Then I got to forge my previous owner's signature to that will. My dream changed a little. Decided I wanted to see the people free and then you came for me. Kato I never thought you would have had the guts to show up like that to save me. Didn't even know how you felt about me. After that I wasn't going to let you pass by without saying. Thought you were dense or something cause you hadn't caught my previous hints."

Considering where they were now she couldn't help chuckling a little. "You know I don't think that I ever dropped the one dream. I still want to see the slaves treated better and I want to know that they have a choice." Anna took a deep breath. "How I help is different now. I won't be running away at night anymore. Maybe I'd rather be a wife to the courageous doctor that lives among the freed slaves and see to it that the colony has a link to information. I'll probably be the ears, mother, and wife." That was what she saw for her future and she gazed at Kato intently. "I can't help it. I'm always going to want to be part of something bigger."

***************************************************************

Killian nodded when Star said she was going to bed. "Ok I'll just take care of Claire then." He didn't know if he felt quite up to that level of activity, but he had to be. Star just about died from some kind of allergic reaction. Wandering into the room after her he strapped the baby pack to himself and loaded Claire into it. That way he would know when she fussed or anything else and Star could rest. Flipping his watch to monitor Star he went back to the couch and laid out on it for a while.

Of course Claire thought it was a good time to try talking to him. Putting her hands on his chin she brushed it and giggled when the little bit of stubble tickled her palms. "Yeah I know." Killian rested a hand on her back and tried to get comfortable. He didn't even get a chance to nap between the baby and then knock on the door.

Slowly pulling himself off the couch he limped over to the door. The leg was still sore and he figured that his knee getting twisted all over again hadn't done him any favors. Turning the knob on the door he pushed it open and stepped out. One of the Chippeqouti nodded to him and he frowned. "Yeah?" Whatever they were here for didn't seem to be the usual. Killian nodded slowly as they said something about a meeting for Chips only. He figured that if nothing else he should go and find out exactly what they were up to. After Star warned him about the possible supremacist movement he had half a feeling that this could be part of it.

Sooni found group of Chips gathered in a circle around a small fire next to the lake. There were about 70 of them listening intently to whomever was speaking in the middle. It was like a council meeting. The question was, what about? The chip who invited her was the one currently speaking. Perrin noted her and nodded in greeting before looking back at his fellow chips. There was a method to everything the chips did. The fire kept the speaker from talking to long, and only one was allowed to talk at a time to avoid the chaos of many voices speaking at once. If necessary, two chips could stand next to the fire and discuss, but again, only for as long as they could withstand the heat. It didn't matter your class, all could speak. But typically the strong bloods were more respected and their voices better listened too.

Her eyes widened slightly as she realized that the majority of chips here were considered of average blood or lower. Very few strong blood in attendance. Either they hadn't been invited and the ones here had heard about it somehow, or they'd chosen not to come. "To recap for you chips just joining us, we are discussing whether or not we will be supporting Killian or Kavis. Killian, as you all know, is a powerful strong blood who beat Kavis in battle while recovering from a cracked skull. He went to the trouble of rescuing all of us and bringing us to a safe planet where we could rebuild. He has thus far kept the peace between us and the humans and having grown up human he has a much better understanding of their culture, making him an excellent mediary as we are forced to merge with the humans for the very sake of our survival. He knows war but seeks peace. It is clear to me that he would be the better leader except for the fact that he knows very little of our own culture."

A quiet murmur and a few nods ripple through the listening chippequoti. "However, it is because of this ignorance that we would be free to choose whether or not to follow the tradition of bloodlines that has kept our people healthy and our blood from failing, however...it has also trapped us in a society where the strong rule the weak. Nearly every one of you here, including me, know that pain. Most of you have been slaves to those in the strong class. We have a chance here, under Killian's leaderships to be free to choose mates as we will, keeping in mind of course our blood. We have a chance to never be slaves again to those stronger than us. We can form a new society, one that includes the humans in peace, not as slaves...but as equals in their own right. I say we support Killian." Sweat dripped down Perrin's face from the fire. "Talos will now speak on behalf of Kavis' leadership. After which the middle is open to anyone who wishes to add their point of view. From there on, it is your choice whom to support...but by hosting this meeting we hope to bring everyone to the same conclusion of whom to support so as not to divide the few of us who are left." Perrin lowered his hands and stepped back into the crowd as Talos took his place by the fire.

He was an older chippequoti. At least 180 years, but still he stood tall. "To follow Killian is foolishness. He is but a youngling still and to follow him is to abandon what is left of our culture. There are only a handful of us left, and Kavis' leadership would provide us the security of keeping our bloodlines intact. Not only that but he knows our culture, he knows our laws, our traditions, our way of resolving disputes. He has proved himself in battle over and over and he has the wisdom and knowledge that comes with age. Following Killian would perhaps provide the opportunity for a life of ease and comfort but we are chippequoti. Ease and comfort things that must be earned. The strong rule the weak. Without that core standard none would be inspired to get stronger. Mark my words, without the strict monitoring of bloodlines that Kavis can provide, our bones will begin failing us in the next 500 years and our children will die horrible deaths. Our people will go extinct and the chippequoti will be no more than a memory. We are already a shadow of a once noble race. Do not make us weaker by following Killian. Support Kavis! He will lead our people back to strength." Talos returned to the crowd. The middle was now open for anyone to speak.

"I can't help it. I'm always going to want to be part of something bigger."
"I know." Kato smiled lightly, putting a hand on her arm. "That's part of what I love about you." He lifted her hand and kissed it tenderly. Then smiled. "Finish your bath, then I'll massage your back." He stood and left her to herself, returning to the room to make sure everything was perfect.

Kato had breakfast ready by the time that Anna was up. He'd cooked a simple meal of blueberry pancakes and put together some orange juice. Pancakes were one of the few things he could make without burning. "Hey, love. How are you feeling this morning?"
